Likeable Spaniard De la Rosa established himself well in the Jaguar team after joining the Milton Keynes based outfit midway through the season.
He was drafted into the team after Luciano Burti's defection to Prost just before the Spanish Grand Prix only to collide with Heinz Harald Frentzen's Jordan on lap five at his native Barcelona.
He picked up his first point for the team with a battling sixth and struck again with a fine fifth in Italy in the autumn.
He proved a reliable performer and completed more than half the races he contested, striking up a working relationship with the team's more experienced driver Eddie Irvine.
He had begun his Formula One career at Arrows in a blaze of glory in 1999 grabbing a point in the Australian Grand Prix but it all went downhill from then on as he failed to pick up another point.
And things were not a great deal better in 2000 though he did manage to double his points haul.
De la Rosa’s driving pedigree is not too shabby with wins in British Formula Three, Japanese Formula Three and GT racing.
And his experience was the principal reason Jaguar had originally signed him up to help with test driving for the start of the 2001 season.
With a full winter of testing behind him in an improving car, this should be de la Rosa's best ever season in Formula One.
