The uncapped Maritimo midfielder flew home from their training camp in Macao after the Portuguese Football Association released him on the "advice of their medical department".
Viana had been playing in Switzerland at the European Under-21 Championship for Portugal, and he caught the eye of English fans when scoring in a 3-1 defeat for David Platt's side.
