Pavlin was on target in the Euro 2000 qualifier against Ukraine and that 1-1 draw sent Slovenia to their first major tournament.
His impressive form continued in the finals and he was on target again in the 3-3 draw with Yugoslavia.
FC Porto were certainly impressed and they signed him shortly afterwards but Pavlin struggled to make much of an impact in his first season.
He played just four times in 2001/02 and was left out of the squad list for the Champions League.
However a new manager arrived earlier this year and Pavlin has been given the chance he craved.
Slovenia coach Srecko Katanec agreed to let him put club before country in the first part of the year and will be looking to be rewarded in the months ahead.
