A tough competitor and a fine header of the ball, Knavs started his career with NK Olimpia Ljubljana in 1993 before moving on to FC Tirol Innsbruck. A string of consistent displays with the Austrian club earned him a move to Bayer Leverkusen and he has continued to develop as a defender with a move to Kaiserslautern. An ever-present in the national side, he grabbed a crucial goal against Russia which went a long way towards booking his side's place in the finals. Injury forced him to miss both legs of the play-off against Romania and Slovenia missed him badly. He will be a key figure for them this summer.
