Nigeria star Jay Jay Okocha has reiterated his intentions to quit the national team now that the Super Eagles are on their way home from the World Cup.

The 28-year-old Paris St Germain midfielder, who skippered the Nigerians in Japan and Korea, previously revealed that he was ready to retire from international football to give the younger players a chance to come through after Festus Onigbinde's men were eliminated from the finals by last Friday's 2-1 defeat to Sweden.

And after the early exit Okocha, who has made history by becoming the first Nigerian to play in three World Cup finals, has confirmed that he still plans to call time on his international career.

"It's a difficult thing. You never say never but honestly, the way I feel now is to quit. I had planned to quit after this World Cup and I think I should stick to it," he told Nigerian daily Vanguard.

"My mind is made up.

"When I was made captain of the team, it almost made me reconsider quitting. I wanted to hang on for a little while to protect the young ones from the things they suffer in the national team.

"I wanted to give these young ones some cover for a while but I realised that one person cannot change the face of Nigerian football. I decided not to hang on."

Okocha replaced Sunday Oliseh as captain after the Borussia Dortmund midfielder was controversially axed from the squad for speaking against injustice in the camp.

He hit out at the Nigeria FA after they refused to refund players' plane tickets during the African Nations Cup earlier this year.
