BRAZIL'S WORLD CUP TRIUMPHS
By Jim van Wijk, PA Sport
Brazil entrenched their position as the greatest footballing nation when
they beat Germany 2-0 in Yokohama to win the World Cup for the fifth time.
Ronaldo came full circle from his disappointment at France 98 with the two
goals which sealed an historic victory.
Here, PA Sport takes a look back at how Brazil conquered the world:
SWEDEN 1958
A 17-year-old Pele inspired Brazil to their first World Cup triumph. His
quarter-final winner against Wales made him the youngest player to score at the
finals. He hit a hat-trick in the semis and two in the final, including the
famous chip over the defender and volley home, as they beat the hosts 5-2.
CHILE 1962
Their second triumph soon followed. Although Pele was injured in the first
game, goals from Garrincha and Vava took them through the tournament. They beat
Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final.
MEXICO 1970
Pele, Rivelino, Tostao, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto - probably the greatest
team to grace the World Cup. Brazil were allowed to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy
after winning it for a third time. Their success, which included a 1-0 win over
England on the way, was rounded off by Carlos Alberto's famous strike in a 4-1
win over Italy.
USA 1994
The long wait for a fourth World Cup crown was finally ended against Italy,
although when it finally arrived it was in rather unspectacular style. After a
goalless draw following extra-time in the final, Roberto Baggio's missed penalty
in the shoot-out handed the golden trophy to the golden boys of football again.
JAPAN/KOREA 2002
The agony of losing in the final to France four years earlier was finally
erased when Ronaldo fired a double to sink Germany in Yokohama. Europe's best
were dispatched along the way, with England undone by two moments of magic in
the quarter-finals. 2002 might have been a World Cup of shocks, but it was
fitting the tournament's best team triumphed in the end.
