KLOSE COULD BE BIG-MONEY TARGET
By Jason Hughes, PA International, Yokohama
When bookmakers were taking bets for the Golden Shoe winner prior to the World
Cup, the name of Miroslav Klose would not have caused them too much
consternation.
But they will certainly know his name now, and there will be some nervously
checking to see if anyone took advantage of a rather generous 125-1.
After a hat-trick in the opening demolition of Saudi Arabia and solitary goals
against the Republic of Ireland and Cameroon, his odds were slashed to 11/4.
The bookies though will only have themselves to blame if they are caught out,
as Klose was probably the most prolific of the strikers coming into the
tournament.
A hat-trick against Austria in their final warm-up game, adding to the one
against Israel earlier in the year.
The Polish-born 24-year-old has scored an incredible 13 goals in just 18 games
for Germany.
He has already earned comparisons with coach Rudi Voller, who scored in three
successive World Cups in collecting 47 international goals.
"Rudi was a great player, but Miroslav is very similar in style," said
team-mate Oliver Bierhoff.
Klose's performances are likely to attract the attention of bigger European
clubs than Kaiserslautern.
Although he has pledged to stay with Andreas Brehme's side, it is likely that
both parties could be tempted by a big-money move.
