TAYLOR DREAMS OF 1967

Scottish Football Association chief executive David Taylor is hoping Germany can overcome Brazil on Sunday - so the Scots can have another crack at becoming unofficial World champions.

That was the title they bestowed on themselves in 1967 by winning at Wembley a year after England had lifted the World Cup.

The Germans are due at Hampden Park in June next year for a Euro 2004 qualifier and Taylor believes that - despite Rudi Voller's team's remarkable run all the way to the final - the Scots were capable of causing an upset.

He said: "I actually do believe that. If they win the World Cup and we beat them it will be 1967 all over again."

The Scots are now managed by one of Germany's 1974 World Cup-winning side and Berti Vogts is keen to recruit his team-mate Rainer Bonhof as under-21 coach.

"I'm a big supporter of Germany now because we want the World Cup winners coming to Hampden next year," Taylor added.

"We could sell it out tomorrow."

Taylor was speaking at an Edinburgh press conference to announce a five-figure sponsorship deal with BT Scotland for the Scots' joint Euro 2008 bid with Ireland.

The bid faces competition from Switzerland and Austria and a four-nation Scandinavian consortium, but Taylor believes Scotland have a good chance of landing the tournament, especially as Hampden Park has just successfully hosted the Champions League final, won by Real Madrid.

He said: "It takes time to build momentum but I can see it now. I think the Champions League helped a lot.

"If you could have 30 Champions League evenings in Scotland what a magnificent thing it would be.

"And we could be the hosts of something almost as big as the World Cup."
