  BRAZIL
Picture Lucio celebrates after Ronaldo's vital goal (Allsport)

BRAZIL v TURKEY PLAYER RATINGS

By Jason Hughes, PA International, Saitama

BRAZIL

MARCOS - Made important saves from Alpay early on, as well as Ilhan Manzis and Hakan Sukur after Brazil had taken the lead through Ronaldo. A vital contribution. 7/10.

CAFU - At 32 years old, the Roma right-back is not as mobile as Roberto Carlos down the other flank. But still supported attacks as often as possible. 6.

LUCIO - Some times stretched at the back as Brazil pushed forward in numbers. The Bayer Leverkusen man showed his own penchant for attacking by starting and finishing a third-minute move that went the full length of the pitch. 7.

ROQUE JUNIOR - Found himself in more of a game once Manzis came off the bench. Should have been booked for a cynical body check on Yildiray Basturk in the first half. 6.

ROBERTO CARLOS - As busy as ever down the left wing, but often chose to utilise his famous shot rather than pass to a team-mate. In one instance, he held up his hand apologising to Ronaldo almost before he struck the ball. 6.

EDMILSON - His disciplined performance in the centre of the park allowed Rivaldo the freedom to venture forward. 6.

GILBERTO SILVA - Booked for pulling back Yildiray Basturk on the edge of the area. His usual no frills midfield display. 7.

KLEBERSON (off 85 mins) - Stretchered off late on but looked to be okay. The hard-working midfielder had a rare opportunity to score in the second half, only to shoot straight at Turkey goalkeeper Rustur. 7.

EDILSON (off 75 mins) - Rustu nicked the ball away from his feet as he set himself to put Brazil ahead just before half-time. Not as effective as Ronaldinho but still caused problems. 7.

RIVALDO - Could have had a hatful in the first half as Turkey afforded him too much space to shoot from the edge of the area. Even tried one effort from 40 yards. 7.

RONALDO (off 68 mins) - The star striker showed his true class before being substituted after running himself into the ground. Tremendous bit of skill to take him away from the defender before an unorthodox toe poke of a shot beat Rustu. His goal made up for allowing Recber to save from six yards in the first half. 8.

LUIZAO (on 68 mins) - Tried a spectacular overhead kick shortly after coming on, the ball landing on the roof of the net. 6.

Denilson (on 75 mins) - Little impact on the match. 6.

Belletti (on 85 mins) - Did not have enough time to prove himself. 6.

TURKEY

RUSTU RECBER - Fortune may have favoured Rustu at times, but he deserved his luck after keeping Turkey in the game. Took a knock on the head after bravely denying Edilson, and also kept out Ronaldo at close range. Caught off guard by Ronaldo's toe poke. 8.

FATIH AKYEL - His last-ditch tackle prevented an almost certain goal from Edilson in the 58th minute. On the attacking front, almost played in Hakan Sukur with a 50-yard arrowed pass. 7.

ALPAY - Forced Marcos into a full-length save with his 20th-minute header from 10 yards out. The Aston Villa defender was usually solid. 7.

BULENT KORKMAZ - Beaten by Ronaldo's superb skill for the goal, but otherwise did well enough. 6.

ERGUN PENBE - Tried to copy Roberto Carlos with his forays from left-back. Not quite as swashbuckling, although still a useful outlet for Turkey. 7.

YILDIRAY BASTURK (off 88 mins) - Covered every blade of grass as he looked to find a breakthrough. The Brazilians resorted to fouling him as a means of preventing the Bayer Leverkusen player getting a foothold on the match. 7.

UMIT DAVALA (off 74 mins) - Instantly recognisable with his Mohican haircut, but did not manage to catch the eye as he produced a below-par display compared with the previous games. 6.

TUGAY - The Blackburn midfielder kept things ticking over in midfield, and was more than a match for his Brazilian counterparts. 7.

EMRE BELOZOGLU (off 62 mins) - His 20-yard free-kick in the 42nd minute flew narrowly over the bar. Otherwise struggled to make an impact and was taken off midway through the second half. 6.

HASAN SAS - Yet again the shaven-headed striker was Turkey's best player. A thorn in the side of the Brazilian backline, just could not find the find the opening for his third goal of the tournament. 7.

HAKAN SUKUR - The Turkey captain produced a better performance than during the rest of the tournament, although he still looked a man well short of confidence. Did force a good save out of Marcos late on. 6.

ILHAN MANSIZ (on 62 mins) - Replaced Emre and came close to adding to his golden goal against Senegal, only for Marcos to tip away. 7.

MUZZY IZZET (on 74 mins) - Kept busy by the Brazilians. 6.

ARIF ERDEM(on 88 mins) - No time to influence the game. 6.
