ENRIQUE CALLS IT QUITS

Spain midfielder Luis Enrique has had enough of international football and retired from the national team.

The Barcelona star, who made 62 appearances for his country - the last in Saturday's controversial quarter-final defeat to World Cup co-hosts Korea - will now focus on his career at the Nou Camp.

``This has been my last appearance with the national team,'' he said.

``I have two more years of top class football inside me and from now I am going to concentrate on Barcelona.''

Barcelona reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last year but they were unsuccessful in the trophy department.

Tiny Figueres knocked them out of the Cope del Rey, Valencia won La Liga and eventual winners Real Madrid eliminated them in the semi-final round of the Champions League.

Hopes are high since the reappointment of Louis van Gaal, the Dutch coach.

``I am looking forward to starting again with Barca, it's about time we did something important. The fans don't deserve to have been so long without celebrating any trophies,'' Luis Enrique told Catalunya Radio.

``I took the decision to retire from international football months before the World Cup and both the President of the Spanish FA (Angel Villar) and the coach (Jose Antonio Camacho) knew several days ago,'' he said.

Luis Enrique admitted that after a season plagued with injuries, he had not really expected the call to travel to Japan and Korea.

``I was injured and didn't know if I would be coming along or not, but I recovered and had a good end to the season.

``I have to thank Camacho for picking me,'' he said, before adding he thought Spain's conquerors South Korea would struggle to get any further in the competition.

``They didn't deserve to beat us and they will have problems from set pieces against Germany,'' he predicted.
