Ilhan Mansiz is confident Turkey can gain sweet revenge against Brazil to set
up a dream World Cup final with Germany.
Mansiz now has his sights set on football's greatest prize after scoring the
golden goal to defeat Senegal in Saturday's quarter-final in Osaka.
For Besiktas sriker Mansiz, a date with the Germans in Yokohama on June 30
would be a fitting climax to a remarkable season for the 26-year-old.
Mansiz was born in Bavaria to Turkish parents and spent most of his formative
years in Germany before then flitting between his adopted country and his
homeland playing for a number of minor clubs.
After three years at Samsunspor, Besiktas took a chance on the pony-tailed
Mansiz last summer and he repaid them with 21 goals, joining Galatasaray's Arif
Erdem as Turkey's leading scorer during a season in which he also won the first
of his 11 caps.
A pin-up at home prior to the World Cup, hero status is guaranteed after his
third international goal just 190 seconds into extra-time sparked unbridled
celebrations in the Nagai Stadium and among Turks the world over.
Mansiz, who came on for ineffective skipper Hakan Sukur midway through the
second half, was at a loss to describe just what the moment meant to him and to
the Turkish people, who are struggling to overcome the country's worst recession
since 1945.
"I think all of Turkey will have come to a standstill," said Mansiz
eventually, before then conceding he and his team-mates were fortunate to be in
the last four.
"Of course it's sensational we have got to the semi-final but it was a
relief, too, after missing so many chances against Senegal.
"We are very lucky because we did not expect to reach the semi-final. Our aim
was to reach the second round, but now we are chasing a place in the final.
"I'm already looking ahead to playing Germany in the final. That is my wish,
and maybe we could beat them to win the World Cup.
"But we first have to beat Brazil. We know them from the first of our group
games, so we know their strengths and weaknesses.
"They didn't play well against Belgium, and if they play like that again I
think we can beat them. We have a chance if we play a technically good game."
Turkey have already surpassed expectations, silencing their critics along the
way, although the ramifications are still being felt as 20 of the 23-man squad
refused to speak to waiting media following their win over Senegal.
But it means a grudge match is on the cards as Turkey are still smarting from
their opening Group C defeat to Brazil when they had two players sent off and
were beaten by a controversial late penalty.
But coach Senol Gunes believes his players can hit back and continue to make
history as he said: "Brazil have improved, but we are also on the up, we are on
a rising trend, we grow better by the day.
"Our footballers have done what they do, spectacular things, and now they can
go on writing the future."
Even Turkey's president Bulent Ecevit is confident Gunes' squad can go on to
lift the trophy in only their second tournament, the last being 48 years ago
when they suffered a first-round exit.
"I am so elated," said Ecevit. "I congratulate all the players and
trainers, but their success will not stop here. They will take it to the end."
Success came at a price for some Turks, though, as three people died in a car
crash in Kocaeli amid celebrations in the city, while four others were injured
by stray bullets fired wildly as gunshots also marked the historic triumph.
