JOYFUL SOUTH KOREANS CELEBRATE
By Lyndsay Moss, PA News
Just 24 hours after England's exit from the World Cup, Trafalgar Square in
London was packed with the more unfamiliar sight of joyful South Korean
fans.
Hundreds of excited South Koreans marched to the Square to celebrate their
team's World Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Spain.
Flag-waving supporters, dressed in red shirts, climbed the steps under
Nelson's Column to chant and beat drums after their team beat the Spanish side
to reach the semi-finals.
It was a much more jubilant crowd than seen in the Square when
England fans applauded quietly as their team crashed out of the tournament 2-1
against Brazil.
Student Sena Park, who lives in Hammersmith, West London, could hardly speak
she was so excited by her team's victory.
''We're going to win the World Cup, we're going to win it,'' she screamed, as
she celebrated with other fans around the Square's fountains.
She watched the tense match in a bar near Trafalgar Square, and said the
atmosphere was ``overwhelming''.
``I'm so excited. I can't describe it, we're going to celebrate all day
long,'' the 28-year-old added.
Kyungseok Hwang, 25, said he had never seen so many South Koreans in one place
during his two years in England.
``It's excellent, absolutely fantastic,'' the student from Rochester said.
``Everyone is so happy. We were outsiders in the tournament, but now anything
can happen,'' he said.
Fans later climbed down from Nelson's Column and continued their march through
London, banging drums and shouting their support. Others remained on the Square,
waving their flags and shouting at passing traffic to show their support also.
