Penalty: Hong Myung-Bo scores - South Korea win 5-3

Man-of-the-match: Young Spanish starlet Sanchez Joaquin was outstanding today and just pips Choi Jin-Cheul to the award. He worked up and down the flanks tirelessly and was behind most of the creativity in the South Korean half.

ET FT: South Korea 0 Spain 0

120 mins: Penalties will decide this quarter-final. Spain have been the better side over the 120 minutes and are out on their feet, but South Korea have battled bravely. Anything can happen now.

120 mins: The free-kick is crossed by Ahn Jung Hwan, but Choi Jin-Cheul's is unable to direct a 15-yard header under pressure on target.

119 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan releases Hwang Sun-Hong down the middle inside the Spanish half. However, Nadal makes a great tackle to dispossess him. Soon after, Romero fouls Park Ji-Sung out on the right to hand South Korea a late free-kick.

118 mins: Spain are patiently passing the ball around and they look content to settle for penalties.

117 mins: Seol Ki-Hyeon crosses well from the left, but Casillas makes a good catch ahead of Hwang Sun-Hong.

116 mins: Spain continue to look the more aggressive side in this extra time period and they win a corner from Puyol's long throw being headed behind by Choi Jin-Cheul. Mendieta's near-post flag-kick is disappointing, though, and Ahn Jung Hwan is eventually able to bring it clear.

115 mins: We are only five minutes away from a penalty shootout. Tension is building around Gwangju.

114 mins: Mendieta looks to find space wide on the left, but Morientes' pass just finds him in an offside location.

113 mins: A good corner from Mendieta is whipped off the toes of Joaquin by Hong Myong-Bo to clear South Korea's lines.

112 mins: Spain win a free-kick that is whipped in devilishly by Hierro. Choi Jin-Cheul makes a brave header, before Baraja's effort is deflected over the bar.

111 mins: A close call at the other end of the field where Morientes is caught offside. His arguing with the referee earns him a yellow card.

110 mins: Seol Ki-Hyeon crosses into the Spanish area after a quick break to give Hwang Sun-Hong a great chance to win the game. However, he opts for placement and not power, hitting his shot into the ground and enabling the Spanish defence to block and clear.

109 mins: A good touch from Hwang Sun-Hong after goalkeeper Lee Woon-Tae's long clearance. He turns and shoots towards Casillas' goal, but the goalkeeper gets down to his left easily to save.

108 mins: Seol Ki-Hyeon finds half-a-yard down the left before curling in a good ball, although their are no South Korean players in the six-yard box to get on the end of it.

107 mins: An early long ball is headed down by Morientes for Mendieta, but his volleyed effort from 30 yards out sails a long way over Lee Woon-Tae's goal.

106 mins: The teams take a short breather before changing ends to restart the action.

ET HT: South Korea 0 Spain 0

105 mins: Half-time in golden goal extra time and Spain will rue their luck having had a fair goal disallowed and Morientes striking the post.

104 mins: An important tackle from Hierro now, as Lee Chun-Soo bursts into the Spanish penalty area.

103 mins: Hierro hits a long ball over the top of the South Korean defence towards Morientes, but it just will not drop for the forward and Choi Jin-Cheul is able to challenge and come away with the ball.

102 mins: A long ball into the Spanish area sees Puyol misjudge the flight, but he does well to block off Ahn Jung Hwan, before forcing him out of the box and eventually seeing Spain win possession.

101 mins: Mendieta takes the corner himself, but he overhits it and South Korea can clear their lines and breathe a massive sigh of relief. They were a coat of paint from going out.

100 mins: More luck for South Korea as a quick throw from the right is met by Morientes on the half volley, but his slightly sliced effort beats the goalkeeper but not the post. The rebound falls to Mendieta, whose shot is deflected over the bar.

99 mins: A correct offside call to deny Joaquin a run in on goal. Both teams are still looking dangerous on the break.

98 mins: Quick passing from Mendieta and Morientes with the latter shooting from 25 yards and seeing his effort deflect into the arms of Lee Woon-Tae.

97 mins: From the left edge of the area, Lee Chun-Soo's dipping effort just fails to come down underneath Casillas' crossbar, although the goalkeeper looked to have the effort covered.

97 mins: Another free-kick to South Korea around 22 yards out as Ahn Jung Hwan goes down easily under a challenge from Puyol.

96 mins: The drive comes in from Ahn Jung Hwan, but it fails to test Casillas, flying wide of his right-hand post.

95 mins: Free-kick to South Korea midway inside the Spanish half for a foot up by Hierro that catches Ahn Jung Hwan.

94 mins: Spain are forced into their final change of the game with Helguera coming out of the game and Barcelona's Xavi taking his place.

93 mins: Helguera stays down clutching his ankle after making a challenge, but play continues with Spain breaking. Joaquin reaches the by-line, stands the ball up to Morientes at the far post and he heads home. But the goal is disallowed as the referee's official wrongly believed the ball to be over the by-line when Joaquin crossed.

92 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan feeds Lee Chun-Soo down the left, but his cross from the by-line is headed clear by Hierro.

91 mins: The teams have received running repairs and motivational words in a short rest period. Next goal wins, but if it is scoreless after 120 minutes, penalties will be called for.

FT: South Korea 0 Spain 0

90 mins: Full-time in Gwangju and for the second game in succession for both teams, golden goal extra time will be used in a bit to separate the two.

90 mins: The free-kick is half-cleared to Lee Chun-Soo, but Casillas gets down comfortably to save. Three minutes are left to play.

89 mins: Is there to be a late twist to the game? Lee Chun-Soo wins a free-kick on the right flank as his shirt is tugged back by Mendieta. Hwang Sun-Hong does come on, with Kim Tae-Young taking his place.

88 mins: A final substitution from South Korea as Hwang Sun-Hong prepares to come on for Hiddink's side.

87 mins: A long ball towards Joaquin sees Lee Woon-Tae come out to the edge of his area and just beat the Real Betis man to the ball.

86 mins: Treatment for Kim Tae-Young as he collects a knock, but after a brief spell on the sidelines, he plays on.

85 mins: Good defending from Joaquin as he tackles Lee Eul-Young deep inside his own territory and comes away with the ball.

84 mins: A long throw from Romero is flicked on by Nadal, but the advancing Baraja sees his subsequent header fly over the bar from ten yards out.

83 mins: Now Spain win a free-kick on the right, but Hierro's cross is eventually turned away by a combination of Choi Jin-Cheul and Lee Woon-Tae.

82 mins: Joaquin looks to break to the by-line, but he is shouldered - fairly - off the ball and South Korea come away with the ball through Lee Eul-Young.

81 mins: A free-kick to Spain just inside the South Korea half as Hong Myong-Bo leaps all over Morientes. A long ball is played by Hierro with Mendieta in mind at the far post, but the pass has too much pace on it and it sails out for a goal kick.

80 mins: With just ten minutes left in normal time, it is going to take a dramatic end to the game to settle matters.

79 mins: As the teams wait for the corner, Valeron is replaced by Luis Enrique for Spain.

78 mins: Mendieta finds a yard of space down the left and his cross is deflected behind for a corner.

77 mins: With both teams just one goal away from a likely spot in the semi-finals, it is understandable that the game is beginning to tighten up again.

76 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan skips around Puyol with a moment of delightful skill on the left flank, but as he advances into the Spanish area, Hierro is on hand to challenge and avert the threat.

75 mins: After a brief respite in Spanish pressure, the game is again switching back towards the favour of Camacho's charges.

74 mins: Substitute Mendieta curls the ball into the box, but Kim Tae-Young - wearing a protective mask on his face - rises highest to head away.

73 mins: Joawuin, arguably Spain's best player, switches flanks and wins a free-kick wide on the left as Song Chong-Gug fells him.

72 mins: Good work from Valeron and Joaquin, who form a one-two with the latter shooting low into the side-netting from just inside the South Korean area.

71 mins: The prospect of golden goal extra-time is again looming for the teams, but at least both have experience of this from their last games.

70 mins: A first Spanish substitution sees Gaizka Mendieta replace De Pedro in midfield.

69 mins: Spain counter quickly and Joaquin turns on the edge of the area and feeds the ball into Morientes. He looks to turn his marker, but Hong Myung-Bo does well to stick to him and tackle perfectly.

68 mins: A neat and incisive break down the inside-right channel from Park Ji-Sung sees his low cross cleared upfield by Puyol at the far post.

67 mins: Park Ji-Sung's chance has lifted the crowd and it also looks to have lifted the team.

66 mins: Spain manage to clear the subsquent corner and they look to ease some of the pressure that South Korea are finally bringing to the game.

65 mins: A second corner creates South Korea's best effort of the game. Park Ji-Sung strikes a shot from a tight angle, but Casillas flies to his right to turn the ball behind.

64 mins: Corner to South Korea and they look to press home for an opening goal.

63 mins: Scrappy play from both sides as play swings from team to team in midfield.

62 mins: A rare counter from South Korea, but it is broken down by the solid Puyol at right back.

61 mins: South Korea ought to try and test out Casillas in the Spanish goal as he has yet to field an effort on goal in the opening hour of the game.

60 mins: Time for a substitution from South Korea with Lee Chun-Soo coming on for Yoo Sang-Chul.

59 mins: South Korea let Joaquin run a long way with the ball inside their own half, and he cuts inside before seeing a left-footed shot from just outside the box well held by Lee Woon-Jae down to his left.

58 mins: A break by Lee Eul-Young down the left ends with his deep cross landing on the roof of Casillas' net with Ahn Jung Hwan waiting in the middle.

57 mins: South Korea look to have eased the pressure that had been building on their goal, giving their defence a real breather as they attempt to press forward themselves.

56 mins: Park Ji-Sung breaks into the right side of the Spanish penalty area, with his run only ending by Hierro thumping the ball behind for a corner. It is swung in by Song Chong-Gug and although Spain only half-cleared, Lee Eul-Young fails to shoot close to Iker Casillas' goal.

55 mins: It looks as though South Korea are poised to bring on Lee Chun-Soo.

54 mins: A yellow card now for De Pedro as he mistimes a tackle on Song Chong-Gug.

53 mins: The impetus and pace of South Korea's early games is really lacking and Spain are continuing to boss matters.

52 mins: A first yellow card of the game is shown to Yoo Sang-Chul for a pull back on Baraja.

51 mins: Spain are really pressing now and Joaquin breaks to the by-line. He pulls the ball back for Morientes at the near post, but the Real Madrid forward is unable to get his boot around the ball, directing it tamely wide for a goal-kick when he should have hit the target.

50 mins: The ball is in the net from Baraja's header off a De Pedro free-kick. However, Morientes is adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box and it is disallowed.

49 mins: With Spain's control of the game, it will be interesting to see if coach Camacho takes an attacking sense of view and brings on a second striker.

48 mins: It does not appear at first glance as though South Korea coach Hiddink has shifted his tactics around, but he is sure to introduce some new players as the half goes on - something he has done with great success in the earlier stages.

47 mins: An early free-kick on the right as Joaquin goes down under Lee Eul-Young's challenge. The cross is sent in by De Pedro and when it falls to Romero after being half-cleared, his strike is disappointing as it rolls out for a goal-kick near the corner flag.

46 mins: Action resumes in Gwangju with no further substitutions made by either coach during the interval.

HT: South Korea 0 Spain 0

45 mins: The half-time whistle sounds and Spain would have wished it not to as they were in total control as the interval approached. It will be an important rest break for South Korea to gather themselves.

45 mins: De Pedro chips in a cross instead of shooting and Hong Myung-Bo flicks it behind. De Pedro swings the flag-kick into the six-yard area, but Hierro heads onto the roof of the net under pressure.

45 mins: Yoo Sang-Chul catches Helguera around 30 yards from the South Korean goal to give Spain a free-kick in a dangerous position.

45 mins: The ball is only half-cleared by the South Korean defence and it falls to De Pedro, whose sliced drive just flies wide of Lee Woon-Tae's right-hand upright.

45 mins: There will be three minutes of stoppage-time played, according to the fourth official.

44 mins: A great run from Joaquin ends with his attempted shot on goal being blocked. If he had scored there, that would have been a goal of the tournament.

43 mins: As the half comes towards its conclusion, Hiddink will be the coach wanting it to arrive as soon as possible so that he can attempt to lift his side with some rousing words and a possible switch in tactics.

42 mins: Spain come within inches of going ahead as Joaquin beats his marker down the right before firing in a great cross just out of Lee Woon-Tae's reach, but also, agonisingly, just beyond the outstretched leg of Morientes.

41 mins: Even though the home fans are in good voice, the atmosphere is lacking compared to the evening games, as has been the case throughout the tournament.

40 mins: Lee Yong-Pyo volleys a half-clearance from long range and it is deflected well wide for a corner to South Korea. It is hit deep by Park Ji-Sung, but Spain win a free-kick for pushing in the area.

39 mins: A long cross into the Spanish area sees Puyol almost concede possession inside his own box, but he quickly recognises that Seol Ki-Hyeon is behind him and he manages to volley away.

38 mins: Play resumes with Hierro appearing fit and well to continue after what was a clash of heads.

37 mins: Spain are looking increasingly more confident all over the field, but they have a minor worry as Hierro receives some treatment on a knock.

36 mins: Kim Tae-Young catches Morientes from behind on the halfway line and receives a strict lecture from the Egyptian referee, but no card is produced.

35 mins: South Korea may not be giving up many chances, but they need to force some play back inside the Spanish half to ease the pressure that has been building.

34 mins: A good run inside from the right by Joaquin sees him just fail to get on the end of a one-two with Morientes. Substitute Lee Eul-Young nips in to claim the ball.

33 mins: Kim Nam-Il is forced out of the game with a recurrence of his injury against Italy. On in his place comes Lee Eul-Young.

32 mins: De Pedro crosses well to find the head of skipper Hierro, but he is always leaning back and his header is always going over Lee Woon-Tae's crossbar from eight yards out.

31 mins: Corner to Spain as Romero wins it off the legs of Hong Myung-Bo.

30 mins: South Korea coach Hiddink is trying to get messages onto the field for his team and it is needed as they are failing to hit the heights of past performances at the moment.

29 mins: It's all Spain for the time being with South Korea stuck on the edge of their 18-yard box. But their defensive line is remaining resolute and watertight, preventing Spain from even getting in an effort on goal.

28 mins: The ball is whipped in by De Pe and Morientes meets it with a firm header from 15 yards out, only for Lee Woon-Jae to make a good save on his line, just being able to keep the ball from going over the goal-line.

27 mins: Kim Tae-Young catches Morientes from behind and Spain have a free-kick inside the South Korea half.

26 mins: The last ten minutes have been better from the Spaniards and Camacho's side are definitely getting a foothold in this game.

25 mins: A worrying moment for South Korea as Ahn Jung Hwan goes down after tangling with Ivan Helguera's legs. However, play continues soon after and the forward is fine to carry on.

24 mins: De Pedro crosses with pace but Choi Jin-Cheul makes an important header out of his own six-yard box.

23 mins: Spain win another free-kick wide on the right corner after careless defending from South Korea.

22 mins: The shot comes in from Hierro, but it is ever so weak and strikes midway up the wall.

21 mins: Joaquin goes on a bursting run from the right flank and he wins a free-kick for Spain around 25 yards out just right from centre.

20 mins: A flowing move down the left shows promising build-up play from South Korea, but the move comes to a premature end when Ahn Jung Hwan's pass catches Seol Ky-Hyeon in an offside position.

19 mins: Better play from Spain as Valeron finds space in midfield, but his pass towards Joaquin on the left is telegraphed and Yoo Sang-Chul intercepts.

18 mins: The first effort on goal is a speculative one from Baraja. A long throw-in from the right bounces up inside the South Korean penalty box and Baraja falls back with his back to goal with an overhead effort that goes tamely wide.

17 mins: Remember, a place in the semi-finals against Germany is at stake for the winner of this game, and both sides will fancy their chances after seeing Rudi Voller's side in action against the USA.

16 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan is tackled well by Nadal on his own by-line and the Real Mallorca defender comes away with the ball.

15 mins: A speedy break down the left from Romero, but his cross in towards Morientes is cleared. Choi Jin-Cheul takes an accidental whack in the head from his captain Hong Myung-Bo in the process.

14 mins: It's been a good start to the game for South Korea, who are enjoying most of the possession, forcing Spain somewhat onto their back foot. There have been no chances so far, but it is an intriguing contest.

13 mins: The ball is drifted in by Kim Nam-Il, but it is just too long for Park Ji-Sung in the Spanish area.

12 mins: Song Chong-Gug is the corner man for South Korea on the right, but his delivery enables Romero to make a comfortable header away.

11 mins: A poor pass from Nadal enables the ball to be thread through towards Ahn Jung Hwan inside the Spanish area, but Fernando Hierro slides in to concede a corner.

10 mins: Kim Nam-Il wins the ball in midfield and so far, he has shown no signs of the injured ankle he picked up against Italy.

9 mins: Play is neatly spread by Francisco De Pedro to the right side, but Joaquin is unable to bring the ball under his control and it runs out for a throw.

8 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan finds some space to the left of the Spanish penalty area, but his cross for Seol Ki-Hyeon is headed clear by Nadal.

7 mins: Spain put together their best passing move of the game so far, but it fails to produce anything with an eventual long ball towards Morientes seeing him foul Hong Myung-Bo.

6 mins: Nice clean-up work from Kim Tae-Young after possession is conceded in midfield to Baraja. He lays the ball back safely to Lee Woon-Jae in the South Korea goal.

5 mins: It's been a tight opening to the match, with little space for either side in a condensed middle third of the pitch.

4 mins: A first touch of the game for Ahn Jung Hwan, but Carles Puyol is close to him and slides in to concede a throw-in.

3 mins: Roben Baraja concedes the first free-kick of the match for a foul on Yoo Sang-Chul in midfield.

2 mins: Spain have lined up, as expected, with more of a 4-5-1 line-up. Deportivo La Coruna star Valeron is not a recognised striker and he is playing just off sole front man Morientes.

1 min: The stadium is already rocking to the sound of South Korean fans as Egyptian referee Gamal Ghandour gets the action started on a warm afternoon.

Pre-match: The big news from Gwanju is that Raul has not been passed fit to start for Spain in today's crunch clash with South Korea. Fernando Morientes started as the only outright striker in Jose Antonio Camacho's side, with Juan Carlos Valeron set to play just behind him. Garcia Juanfran was also dropped, along with Luis Enrique. In came Miguel Angel Nadal, Sanchez Joaquin and Enrique Romero. For South Korea, Guus Hiddink was able to name the same eleven that started in the dramatic extra-time victory over Italy.
