TURKS WORTHY OF PLACE - GUNES
Turkey coach Senol Gunes claims his side deserve their place in the last four
of the World Cup following Saturday's golden-goal victory over Senegal.
Substitute Ilhan Mansiz scored the game's only goal in the fourth minute of
extra time to put Turkey in the last four in what is their first appearance in
the tournament since 1954.
They will now face Brazil on Wednesday looking to gain revenge for their 2-1
defeat in their opening group game.
Gunes said: "Brazil are one of the best teams in the tournament, but we did
not deserve to lose the game.
"But we have showed in other matches that we deserve to be in the
semi-final.
"We have an even chance of beating Brazil, but the quality of our play is
increasing with every game. That is a big advantage for us."
Turkey should have settled matters in normal time, with captain Hakan Sukur
the biggest culprit for them failing to break the deadlock earlier.
"Today we controlled the game very well and we did what we wanted to do, but
we missed a lot of chances," added Gunes.
"We are proud though to eventually make our people back home in Turkey very
happy.
"But for Hakan Sukur, I must say he is one of the best ever Turkish players
and we know he was unlucky not to score."
Gunes praised their beaten opponents despite yesterday raising questions about
their style of play.
"I want to congratulate Senegal because they got here from a very difficult
group," he said.
"It was a fair match and we did not see the elbows from them that we have
seen in other games.
"But there was little chance for them today against a Turkey side who gave
everything."
Senegal coach Bruno Metsu was upbeat, preferring to look to the future rather
than dwell on defeat in their maiden World Cup finals.
"Luck and maybe talent made its choice today, but I would like to thank my
players for their efforts," said the Frenchman.
"Our collective spirit and togetherness has seen us through to this stage.
"I am very proud that a small country like Senegal can come to the World Cup
and shake up the hierarchy of world football.
"It has been a long adventure and it has now come to an end. Our next
objective will be to win the African Nations Cup.
"This tournament gives us hope for the future, to develop Senegalese football
and African football in general."
Metsu admitted that on the day, Turkey proved just too strong for his team,
only the second African side to reach the last eight of the World Cup.
"It was an end-to-end game, but we came up against a very good Turkish
side," he said.
"Turkey have only lost one match in the tournament, and that was against
Brazil, perhaps even against the run of play."
