1997: Receives MBE in New Year's Honours List for services to sport.

Is appointed England captain for match v Moldova on September 10, when he will win his 37th cap.

Keeps a clean sheet against Italy in the Olympic stadium to help England qualify for France '98.

1998: Misses three England games through injury, but returns for 3-0 win against Portugal at Wembley.

Is an integral part of Glenn Hoddle's World Cup team but he gives a penalty away against Argentina, and cannot do anything to save England as they go out through penalties after Paul Ince and David Batty both miss and David Beckham is sent off before full-time.

Selected in Kevin Keegan's Euro 2000 squad.

October - Dietmar Hamann beats him with long-range free-kick in England's 1-0 opening World Cup qualifier defeat against Germany - the last competitive game at the old Wembley Stadium.

2001: April - Signs a one-year extension on his Arsenal contract.

May - Arsenal beaten 2-0 by Barcelona in Seaman's testimonial at Highbury, although the game nets him an estimated £600,000.

October - Misses crunch World Cup qualifier against Greece with a shoulder injury.

2002: February - Makes Arsenal comeback in 1-1 Champions League draw at Bayer Leverkusen following almost five months out.

May - Is crucial part of squad as Arsenal claim Premiership and FA Cup double, and his return to form after long-term injury is confirmed by selection for Sven-Goran Eriksson's World Cup squad.

June - Stars as England concede just one goal on the way to the quarter-finals in Japan. But during England's last-eight clash against Brazil, Seaman is widely seen to be at fault for the South Americans' winner as Ronaldinho's cross-cum-shot from a free-kick loops over his head and into the back of the net. However David Beckham claims it would be an "absolute disgrace" were Seaman to be vilified over the "fluke" goal.
