Teddy Sheringham believes England could be "peaking at the right time" as
they look to gain their first ever World Cup win over Brazil in Friday's
quarter-final in Shizuoka.
The Tottenham playmaker is confident Sven-Goran Eriksson's side are coming
nicely to the boil as they prepare to face the four-time champions.
And he feels England should take great heart from their win over another South
American country in Argentina in the group stages exactly a fortnight ago in the
Sapporo Dome.
Sheringham said: "Playing in the quarter-finals of the World Cup is great
anyway but to be playing against Brazil, one of the favourites, and all that it
brings with it, is something you want to be involved in.
"They beat Denmark 2-0 and also have not conceded many goals in the
tournament so I don't think they're worried from that point of view. They are
performing well but it's a fixture we want to be involved in."
Sheringham believes scoring the first goal may be crucial for England judging
by how Brazil coped before taking the lead against Belgium.
He said: "I think it was a little bit apprehensive from the Brazilian point
of view. There were times when the Belgians could have taken the lead and, if
they had done, it might have been a different game.
"They went on from there after Belgium had what looked a perfectly good goal
disallowed but up until their first goal they were a little bit apprehensive."
Sheringham added: "It will be great atmosphere and we are a very good team
and if we are creating chances then hopefully we will get on the end of them.
"Hopefully we are peaking at the right time. Hopefully we are building up to
our best results when they are most needed. We take a lot from beating
Argentina."
Midfielder Trevor Sinclair said: "These are the kind of games that make you
want to be a footballer. All the lads are excited about it but we just want to
get out there and do the job.
"They've got some great players and all the guys appreciate the style and
skill the play with - but sometimes it's not the most skilful players who win.
"Instead it's the most organised ones, the ones who want it most on the
night, that sometimes triumph."
