They are the kings of the free-kicks - the men with dynamite in their boots at
set-pieces.
England's match against Brazil could be settled by a moment of magic from
either David Beckham or Roberto Carlos.
Here PA Sport's Ken Gaunt looks at the special qualities of both players.
ACCURACY
Beckham's stunning free-kick in stoppage-time against Greece propelled England
into the finals. He is also schooled in art of crossing the ball with
devastating effect.
Carlos's 25-yard effort in the Tournoi de France in 1997 against the host
nation defied belief. The ball headed out wide before breaking towards goal and
past a baffled Fabien Barthez.
<
POWER<
The England skipper tends to try to place the ball rather than power it.
However, as he showed for Manchester United against Wimbledon he can score from
distance even in open play.
Carlos packs a wallop even though he looks lightweight compared to the rest of
the Brazilian cast. Loves to boom in free-kicks from any angle and David Seaman
will have to be on his guard.
<
TEMPERAMENT<
Beckham rarely lets his head go down, even if he is having no luck with
free-kicks, crosses or corners. Despite his success, he continues to work
feverishly on his game.
The Real Madrid star has fought hard to become a regular figure in the Brazil
line-up. Known to deliver a killer ball in the heat of the battle for both club
and country.
<
FAR EAST RECORD
Beckham got off the mark in spectacular style by scoring the winner from the
penalty spot against Argentina. Looks fully fit after breaking a bone in his
foot.
Carlos has also broken his duck in the tournament. He got the opening goal in
the 4-0 rout of China with a trademark thunderbolt free-kick from 20 yards.
