SOUTH KOREA v ITALY MINUTE-BY-MINUTE

By James Dart, Sportinglife.com

Final score: South Korea 2 Italy 1 (AET)

Man-of-the-match: Seol Ki-Hyeon was the star of the show and his crucial late goal capped a marvellous performance. His pace caused problems down the left and will provide a real threat in the quarter-finals.

117 mins: GOAL AHN JUNG HWAN - He may have missed a penalty, but he salvages himself with the golden goal. What drama. The cross is floated in from the left and Ahn Jung Hwan rises to head low past Buffon from seven yards out to send the stadium into sheer ecstasy. Game over - arrivederci Italy.

116 mins: Trapattoni looks as though he is poised to bring Vincenzo Montella into the game.

115 mins: A yellow card for South Korea's Choi Jin-Cheul as he clips the heels of Vieri from behind.

114 mins: With every minute that passes, the vision of penalties looms ever larger on the horizon. Will it be the second shootout of the finals.

113 mins In comes the corner towards the head of Vieri, but South Korea defend the ball well and they escape.

112 mins: What a brilliant save from Lee Woon-Jae to deny Gattuso. The Milan player bursts down the right only for Seol Ki-Hyeon to try a stupid backheel. He turns the ball back to Gattuso, who breaks clear on the goalkeeper, only for his shot to be tipped over the bar in stunning fashion.

111 mins: Seol Ki-Hyeon picks out Hwang Sun-Hong in the middle of the Italian area, in yards of space. But he heads weakly into the floor and Buffon can gather.

110 mins: Italy still have one substitution remaining and it will be interesting to see if Trapattoni rearranges his line-up ahead of penalties.

109 mins: Goalscorer Seol Ki-Hyeon reaches the by-line on the left flank, but only picks out Buffon with his cross into the box.

108 mins: Tommasi crosses with pace towards the near post, but Choi Jin-Cheul keeps a close eye on Vieri's run and he volleys away from the danger area.

107 mins: Italy have a free-kick wide on the right as Gattuso goes down under Lee Chun-Soo's tackle.

106 mins: The teams change end and the action starts all over the game. We're 15 minutes from penalties - but remember, Italy have gone out of the last three finals on spot-kicks.

ET HT: South Korea 1 Italy 1

105 mins: Italy will now be looking for penalties, but can South Korea take advantage of their extra man in the time remaining in golden goal extra time.

104 mins: RED CARD TOTTI - More bad news for the Italians as Totti goes down under Song Chong-Gug's tackle. The referee sees it as simulation and books the Roma striker - his second of the game - and Totti is off!

103 mins: When the corner is cleared out of the Italian area, Lee Yong-Pyo shoots and Buffon gets behind it to save.

102 mins: The cheeky effort comes in low from Hwang Sun-Hong as he shoots underneath the wall, forcing Buffon to tip the ball around the post.

101 mins: A tired tackle from Maldini brings Park Ji-Sung down in a central position around 22 yards out.

100 mins: Neither side will really want the game to go to penalties, especially the Italians, who have such a poor record in sudden-death spot-kicks.

99 mins: Roared on by the large crowd, South Korea are still playing well, but Lee Chun-Soo catches Tommasi and earns himself a booking.

98 mins: Free-kick to South Korea midway inside the Italian half. It is taken quickly to Cha Du-Ri, whose cross is knocked down towards Ahn Jung HWan, but he can't get the ball under his control and Maldini sweeps clear.

97 mins: Park Ji-Sung crosses, but Iuliano goes up to claim the header.

96 mins: Good play from South Korea as they build down the left. A cross comes in and Coco is forced to chest behind for a corner.

95 mins: Having defended so resolutely for so much of the game, it's difficult for Italy to change their mindset for this golden goal period.

94 mins: Italy break themselves and Di Livio wins a corner for the Azzurri. Totti looks to pick out Tomassi with a deep cross, but it flies over his head.

93 mins: Three quick corners in succession as Park Ji-Sung's delivery fails to beat the first defender, Gattuso at the near post.

92 mins: Totti and Vieri link up down the inside-left channel, but the latter's low cross fails to test the goalkeeper. South Korea break quickly to win a corner.

91 mins: The atmosphere inside the stadium is electric once again. Italy coach Trapattoni will have had an important job in rousing his troops during the short break ahead of this extra-time period. Italy get us started.

FT: South Korea 1 Italy 1

90 mins: What a chance for Seol Ki-Hyeon to win it. The Italian defence is at sixes and sevens. He finds room on the left edge of the Italian area, but shoots into the side-netting, much to Italy's relief. Seconds later, the final whistle goes. It's golden goal extra-time!

90 mins: A last-gasp corner for South Korea. Song Chong-Gug crosses from the right and in the melee after Maldini fails to clear, substitute Cha Du-Ri's overhead kick flies straight into the arms of Buffon.

90 mins: Two minutes of added-time will be played.

89 mins: What drama as Vieri misses an open goal less than 60 seconds after the equaliser. Tommasi's cross from the right is met by Vieri just six yards out, but somehow he puts the ball over the bar.

88 mins: GOAL SEOL KI-HYEON - From nowhere it's 1-1. A neat move into the Italian box sees Panucci make a right mess of a cross from Hwang Sun-Hong into the area and Seol Ki-Hyeon fires past the rooted Buffon and into the corner of the net.

87 mins: Italy have a free-kick on the right that Totti sends in towards the head of Vieri, who makes a good run across his marker. He just fails to connect, though, and Lee Woon-Jae can gather and kick upfield.

86 mins: It is looking more and more as though both of the co-hosts will be crashing out of the finals in the same day.

85 mins: Totti's corner is half-cleared by Lee Yong-Pyo and Zanetti's ambitious follow-up from 30 yards spirals over the crossbar.

84 mins: Even with their territorial control, South Korea still look less like scoring than the Italians, who win a corner through Gattuso.

83 mins: Excellent defending from Italy. They are being pressed right back, but everyone from Tommasi through to Buffon is playing their part in keeping things calm at the back.

82 mins: A last change from Hiddink as he throws on Cha Du-Ri. Off comes Hong Myung-Bo.

80 mins: After Song Chong-Gug is booked for a foul on Tommasi, a long shot is sent raking in by Vieri, but it is low and straight at Lee Woon-Jae.

79 mins: Scrambling defending in the Italian box after Seol Ki-Hyeon is denied by two defenders and Buffon at the near post.

78 mins: A stunning run from Totti takes him over 40 yards and past three South Korean defenders, only to try and take on one more instead of shooting from the edge of the area. He goes down theatrically, claiming a bodycheck off Yoo Sang-Chul, but the defender only stood his ground and play continues.

77 mins: Totti's corner sees only two Italian players in the area. Unsurprisingly, South Korea clear their lines. Italy's intent is clearly to hold onto what they currently have.

76 mins: Play switches ends quickly and Vieri finds himself on his stronger left foot on the left side of the South Korean area, only to see a deflected shot leave the goalkeeper stranded but land on the roof of the net.

75 mins: Persistent play down the right by Song Chong-Gug wins him a corner off Coco. The same player centres his flag-kick, but Italy remain solid in the middle and Maldini heads away.

74 mins: It should be all over as Vieri breaks the offside trap to find himself bearing down on Lee Woon-Jae in the South Korea goal. But the ball is on his weaker right foot and the Inter hitman slices tamely wide to let the South Koreans right off.

73 mins: Italy win a free-kick fully 35 yards out from Lee Woon-Jae's goal and Totti lashes a poor shot a long way over the bar.

72 mins: Another substitution from Trapattoni with Angelo Di Livio coming on and Zambrotta, who collected a slight knock a few moments ago, leaves the pitch.

70 mins: Into the last 20 minutes now and Buffon just isn't being tested in the Italian goal. The Azzurri have a real stranglehold on the game whenever South Korea break.

69 mins: The best player on the field for South Korea, Seol Ki-Hyeon bursts past Panucci before standing up a deep cross to Ahn Jung Hwan. He could lay the ball off to a team-mate, but opts to take on Coco and the defender slides in to win the ball.

68 mins: Lee Chun-Soo is the man to replace the unfortunate Kim Nam-Il, as time continues to run down - possibly on South Korea's World Cup dream.

67 mins: A corner to Italy after Zambrotta's battling. Totti sends his cross deep, but it evades everyone.

66 mins: Closer inspection of television replays show poor Kim Nam-Il twisting his ankle in that last challenge and he won't be coming back.

65 mins: With Kim Nam-Il lying prone on the ground, Italy play on through Zambrotta inside the South Korean area, only for his low cross to be intercepted and cleared into the stands.

64 mins: The game is following a very similar pattern to that earlier in the day, where Japan fell behind early to a Turkish goal and failed to make use of their domination.

63 mins: Italy have a free-kick wide on the right deep inside the South Korean half. Panucci lines up to curl it in, but his delivery fails to beat the man at the near post.

62 mins: A change for South Korea now with Kim Tae-Young going off and Hwang Sun-Hong coming on to win his 100th cap.

61 mins: Inside the final third of the game and South Korea remain the team in the ascendancy regarding possession. It can't be understated how important it is they take advantage of this.

60 mins: A first substitution for Italy with Del Piero being replaced by Gennaro Gattuso.

59 mins: The ball is played sideways to Ahn Jung Hwan, but the whistle goes for a foul against South Korea for pushing on the edge of the wall. A real waste.

58 mins: Park Ji-Sung just beats Coco to a loose ball on the edge of the Italian area and South Korea have a free-kick. Zanetti's complaints earn him a booking.

57 mins: All credit to South Korea for their play since half-time. Hiddink has been able to add pace and incisiveness to their game.

56 mins: Italy counter with pace through Zambrotta down the right flank. He crosses to the far post, where Del Piero's goalbound volley is blocked in the face by Choi Jin-Cheul.

55 mins: A booking for Tomassi for a foul on Lee Yong-Pyo. The free-kick is drifted into the Italian box but Buffon comes out to collect well.

54 mins: Maldini is caught out by the lively Seol Ki-Hyeon, who nips in behind him on the right by-line. He touches the ball back to Yoo Sang-Chul, whose cross is hacked clear by Panucci.

53 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan squares the ball to Yoo Sang-Chul, but his shot is blocked by the diving Zanetti.

52 mins: The turn of South Korea to win a free-kick in an advanced position, around 22 yards out from goal in a central position as Iuliano needlessly fells Ahn Jung Hwan.

51 mins: Panucci gets the chance to cross with a free-kick from the right. His low centre almost sneaks its way through to Vieri, but Lee Woon-Jae comes out to win the ball.

50 mins: Kim Tae-Young tangles with Del Piero and the former elbows the Italian star inside the South Korean area. Not only is a penalty not awarded, but the referee also fails to issue a red card.

49 mins: Free-kick to Italy inside the South Korean half as Del Piero goes down under Kim Tae-Young's tackle.

48 mins: Italy are conceding possesion far too easily in the early stages of the half, giving the ball away for South Korea to build with.

47 mins: A bright opening from the co-hosts, with Seol Ki-Hyeon doing well down the left, before pulling the ball back to Song Chong-Gug, who fails to connect well with his attempted shot on goal.

46 mins: South Korea get us started in the second period with no changes in personnel made during the break.

HT: South Korea 0 Italy 1

45 mins: Two minutes are added on before the half-time whistle sounds. South Korea should have been ahead early on and Vieri has really made them pay since. Italy have again failed to shine, but they are snuffing out most routes to goal, giving South Korea very few opportunities.

45 mins: Eventually, Song Chong-Gug's corner is crossed, but Iuliano contrives to clear. The ball soon falls to Ahn Jung Hwan and his drive from 25 yards is saved well down low by Buffon. The Juve goalkeeper has had an exemplarary half.

44 mins: The Italian physios are having trouble stopping Coco's cut from bleeding and the new Inter man leaves the field for the time being.

43 mins: Song Chong-Gug crosses with pace, but the ball is turned behind for another corner. Coco catches an accidental blow in the face from Tomassi and starts bleeding profusely from a wound just above his left eye.

42 mins: It is Ahn Jung Hwan who steps up to take the free-kick, but it catches a slight deflection and goes behind for a corner.

41 mins: South Korea do get a chance as Cristiano Zanetti just catches Ahn Jung Hwan around 26 yards from goal, right from centre.

40 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan floats a deep cross looking for Seol Ki-Hyeon, but it has just too much pace on it, and the latter is unable to keep the ball in play.

39 mins: South Korean coach Hiddink will probably be looking forward to the interval so that he can deliver some important words to his team.

37 mins: Totti lays off an astute pass into the path of Tomassi, but the Roma man's shot is saved by goalkeeper Lee Woon-Jae from close range.

36 mins: Italy win a free-kick wide on the right, but Totti's delivery is disappointing and Kim Tae-Young volleys away.

35 mins: An escape for Italy, but they won't be so worried as it is the first real threat on their goal in the last 15 minutes or so.

34 mins: South Korea come close to a leveller with a great move. Song Chong-Gug plays the ball in to Ahn Jung Hwan. He turns on a sixpence, but fires just over from an angle around 14 yards out from goal.

33 mins: A quick break from box to box is instigated by Del Piero, then Totti and Vieri, but South Korea shut down the counter.

32 mins: Choi Jin-Cheul and Del Piero tangle wide on the left, with the South Korean player winning a free-kick.

30 mins: The sting has started to go out of the South Korean side. They are dominating possession, but it is getting them nowhere.

29 mins: Rare space for Del Piero midway inside the South Korean half, but his run ends with a weak 25-yard shot that is pulled well wide of Lee Woon-Jae's goal.

28 mins: A long diagonal ball from Panucci towards Del Piero is just flicked on by Yoo Sang-Chul to concede a throw-in.

26 mins: The atmosphere remains electric in Daejeon, but the Koreans need to inject a little impetus in their play to take advantage of their superior possession.

25 mins: Italy are being forced onto the back-foot for the time being with Lee Yong-Pyo just denied a shooting opportunity outside the penalty area.

24 mins: Both teams are looking to develop down the flanks, but the biggest worry for Italy is the lack of impression being made by Del Piero.

23 mins: Hong Myung-Bo breaks down the inside-right channel, but Coco and Maldini combine to dispossess him.

22 mins: An injury in midfield to Kim Nam-Il as he collects an elbow in the face from Totti. It was accidental, but Totti was careless and he is booked.

21 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan's missed penalty is proving all that more costly at the moment. Will they get any chances as good as that again?

20 mins: Trapattoni's side begin to take the sting out of the game.

19 mins: Poor defending from the South Koreans as they are made to pay for slack marking at the corner. You can't give Vieri free headers that close to goal.

18 mins: GOAL VIERI - Totti's corner is curled with pace by Totti, with the powerful Vieri heading home from five yards out at the near post.

18 mins: Del Piero whips in the free-kick, but Lee Woon-Jae does well to punch clear. Moments later, Totti wins a corner.

18 mins: A yellow card for Kim Tae-Young after going through the back of Zambrotta.

17 mins: Seol Ki-Hyeon reaches the by-line and pulls back an excellent ball that just evades Ahn Jung Hwan inside the Italian area, enabling Romassi to come back and clear.

16 mins: Totti strikes a low effort from the set piece, but it hits the back of Damiano Tommasi, who knew very little about it.

15 mins: Free-kick to Italy on the left edge of the South Korean box as Del Piero goes down quite easily under Choi Jin-Cheul's robust tackle.

14 mins: Buffon has to race out of his goal after Kim Nam-Il's ball upfield towards the pacy Seol Ki-Hyeon. The goalkeeper gets his head on the ball and it falls to Maldini.

13 mins: Play slows down after its frenetic opening to the game. Del Piero is still to really show.

12 mins: An excellent break from Italy as Totti feeds Vieri down the inside-left channel and his curling effort just carries over the angle of post and bar.

11 mins: The South Korean players are looking lively across the field, despite their penalty miss, and they are winning a lot of the ball in midfield.

10 mins: A brief stoppage in play as Kim Tae-Young catches a stray arm in the face from Vieri. It appeared accidental, but after a short recuperation period, Kim returns to the field.

9 mins: After that penalty miss, South Korea are just looking to settle themselves down. But what a great chance to go ahead against the Italians!

8 mins: Italy win their first corner of the game, but Totti's flag-kick is caught comfortably inside his six-yard box by Lee Woon-Jae.

7 mins: The corner is whipped in by Park Ji-Sung, but Italy clear their lines to get a vital breather.

6 mins: Ahn Jung Hwan steps up to take the kick, but he sees his effort brilliantly tipped around the post by Buffon, at full stretch.

5 mins: Penalty to South Korea. Ki-Hyeon Seol and Yoo Sang-Chul both appear to be dragged down by Christian Panucci and Coco, respectively, from Song Chong-Gug's free-kick.

4 mins: The first booking of the game is shown to Coco, who catches the leg of Park Ji-Sung, as the midfielder speeds down the right.

3 mins: An advanced run from Seol Ki-Hyeon down the left flank ends with his cross too hard for Ahn Jung Hwan. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon collects comfortably.

2 mins: Patient build-up from Italy at the back as they release Gianluca Zambrotta down the right, before seeing his cross just elude the head of Vieri in the middle.

1 min: The Ecuadorian referee gets the action started on a warm evening in front of a partisan crowd.

Pre-match: The big news from Daejeon is that Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni has named Alessandro Del Piero in his team. The Juve man plays alongside Francesco Totti and Christian Vieri. But there was no place for Alessandro Nesta or the suspended Fabio Cannavaro, with Paolo Maldini shifting across to centre-back, alongside Mark Iuliano. Francesco Coco came in at left-back. South Korea coach Guus Hiddink was able to name an unchanged line-up to the team that beat Portugal 1-0 in their last group game.
