JAPAN v TURKEY MINUTE-BY-MINUTE

By James Dart, Sportinglife.com

Final score: Japan 0 Turkey 1

Man-of-the-match: Turkish midfielder Tugay Kerimoglu was outstanding throughout and did well to almost nullify the threat of Ono and Hidetoshi Nakata. He can look forward to his country's first last-eight spot in history.

90 mins: After three extra minutes of added-time, the final whistle goes to end Japan's involvement in these finals. They have been great to have in the competition, but this was a game too far. Turkey were well-organised and took one of the few chances in the game. They go on to meet Senegal in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

90 mins: Hidetoshi Nakata's corner is poor, though, and a free-kick is given to Turkey for pushing in the box.

90 mins: Ono's cross is bravely headed behind by Ergun's dive.

90 mins: Morishima goes down around 25 yards from the Turkish goal on the right. A yellow card is given to Sukur.

90 mins: Nishizawa may well have spurned Japan's last chance as his shot from 20 yards out is sliced off his toe and well wide. Turkey, meanwhile, substitute Basturk with Ilhan Mansiz coming on.

89 mins: It looks as if this is the end of the road for Japan, with Turkey still looking comfortable to keep the co-hosts at bay.

88 mins: A rare shooting chance for Matsuda, but Bulent does well to deflect his driven effort up and into the arms of Rustu.

87 mins: Sukur looks to cause mayhem inside the Japanese area, but he is comfortably ushered off the ball as Koji Nakata boots upfield.

86 mins: A last throw of the dice from Japanese coach Troussier as substitute Ichikawa himself is sacrificed for striker Hiroaki Morishima.

85 mins: There is still no sign of a really rousing finale to the game and it could well be heading for an anticlimactic end to Japan's World Cup campaign.

84 mins: Turkish coach Gunes makes another change with Sas leaving the field and Tayfur Havutcu replacing him.

83 mins: A deep cross from Ergun into the Japanese area fails to pick out either Sukur or Nihat and Miyamoto dribbles away.

82 mins: Sas, who continues to look like Turkey's most dangerous player, breaks down the left, only to lose the ball, but then get lucky himself as Toda concedes possession sloppily.

81 mins: It is taken short to Hidetoshi Nakata, but his first-time cross into the six-yard box enables Rustu to take a comfortable catch.

80 mins: A little bit of pressure from Japan as Ichikawa's cross is headed out for a throw by Bulent. And moments later, they win a corner.

79 mins: It's all very nice from Japan, but there is no cutting edge in the final third of the field. Nishizawa looks to inject some with a powerful drive from 23 yards out, but Rustu is again able to see it fly safely over his bar.

78 mins: Calm defending from Bulent as he chests down Ono's cross inside his area and Rustu can easily collect.

77 mins: The biggest problem for Japan is that they are simply not testing Turkish goalkeeper Rustu. He has not been forced into a diving save in the entire match.

76 mins: Tugay now goes down clutching his ankle and play is forced to stop temporarily.

75 mins: Sas almost squeezes a ball through to Basturk, but Miyamoto leaps to get his head to it and intercept.

74 mins: It remains to be seen what Troussier can do to change things around now for his side. He does have other attacking options on the bench, though, so perhaps he will throw them on.

73 mins: A change now from Turkey coach Gunes, who decides to bring goalscorer Umit off and replace him with perennial substitute Nihat Kahveci.

72 mins: Less than 20 minutes remain for Philippe Troussier's side to save themselves and prevent this from being the coach's last ever match in charge for Japan.

71 mins: Ono's cross is poor and Ergun can head away with ease. Turkey counter through Sas, whose run is finally ended inside the Japanese box by Miyamoto's strong presence.

70 mins: Free-kick to Japan wide on the left inside the Turkish half as Umit is adjudged to have felled Hidetoshi Nakata.

69 mins: Ergun whips the flag-kick in with pace, but Naoki Matsuda flicks behind. The second flag-kick is crossed with pace, but Alpay is unable to direct his attempt anywhere near the goal.

68 mins: A slack moment of defending from Ono as he glances a harmless-looking cross behind for a corner.

67 mins: Suzuki wins a free-kick wide on the right after Bulent catches him. The cross is half-cleared, but Hidetoshi Nakata's subsequent pass towards Suzuki is overhit.

66 mins: A warning for Narazaki and Japan that Turkey are still a threat on the break, as Basturk's long run ends with a 30-yard drive that arcs just wide of the left-hand post.

65 mins: Ono hits the corner deep to Hidetoshi Nakata, but when he turns the ball back into the danger-zone, Fatih makes a headed clearance.

64 mins: The best move of the game involves Toda, Ono and Nishizawa, with Suzuki just unable to fire off a shot inside the Turkish box, before Fatih Akyel concedes a corner.

63 mins: Japan work space for a chance well, but Myojin fails to hit the target with a low 25-yard shot at the end of the move.

62 mins: Another break from Sas down the right flank, but his delivery lets him down, as Narazaki comes out to catch - much to the frustration of Sukur who is waiting for the cross.

61 mins: A good chance for Nishizawa now, as a fine cross from the right is met by the tall striker, but he heads straight into the grateful hands of Rustu.

60 mins: Sas launches a pacy counter, taking on three defenders before shooting low with his favoured left foot, but straight at Narazaki.

59 mins: As we approach the hour-mark, the home fans continue to cheer their side on, but they are seeing little response from their team.

58 mins: Pressure is building on the Turkish penalty area, but at the moment, Japan are looking to play one ball too many.

57 mins: After a lull in play, Ono beats Umit down the left, only to see his cross headed away at the near post. Japan keep the pressure up, but Rustu finally gathers.

55 mins: Hidetoshi Nakata breaks forward with a good run. The ball eventually is laid back to Toda, whose cross is hacked away by Alpay just ahead of Suzuki and his own goalkeeper Rustu. Ono collects on the left, but his cross curls behind for a goal-kick.

54 mins: Better possession is being enjoyed by Japan, but they are still unable to break down what is a resolute Turkish defence and midfield.

53 mins: A free-kick to Turkey inside the Japan half with Myojin bringing down Basturk. Nothing comes from the set piece, though.

52 mins: Shooting opportunity for Hidetoshi Nakata, but he drives his 22-yard shot into the ground and up into the arms of Rustu.

51 mins: A good through-ball from Toda picks out Suzuki in the Turkish box, but the striker looks to step on the ball and he goes down - penalty claims are waved away.

50 mins: Bulent Korkmaz stays down after being caught by a stray leg from Nishizawa. No free-kick is awarded, but the player looks to be in trouble.

49 mins: Sukur fails to play in a simple ball to Basturk inside the Japanese half as his disappointing finals continues.

48 mins: An injury worry for Japan with Ichikawa going down after a collision with Hakan Unsal. He receives treatment and appears fully-recovered.

47 mins: Suzuki has also arrived on the field as a substitute, with Alex going off.

46 mins: A change from Japan during half-time sees Inamoto go off and Daisuke Ichikawa come on in his place.

HT: Japan 0 Turkey 1

45 mins: Half-time after a minute of time added-on. The game has been an intriguing one, despite a lack of clear-cut chances, and Japan are unlucky not to be level after Alex's close call. One moment of defensive slackness has cost them at the back and they will need to dictate the game in the second half as they search for an equaliser.

45 mins: A booking now for Toda as Turkey look to break out of their own half, only for Basturk to be tripped.

45 mins: Ono whips the ball into the Turkish box, but Alpay beats Alex to the ball as he heads behind. The corner is poor, though, and Turkey escape.

44 mins: A booking to Ergun as he is adjudged to have caught the leg of Alex as Japan have a free-kick 30 yards out on the right.

43 mins: The gasp of agony from the crowd as they see the replay of Alex's shot hitting the woodwork sums up how close he came to scoring - and how important it would have been.

42 mins: Awful luck for Japan as Alex's delightful curling shot beats the wall, leaves Rustu rooted to the spot, but rebounds off the angle of post and bar.

41 mins: A clumsy leap from Alpay right on the edge of his own penalty area catches Hidetoshi Nakata and as he goes down, a free-kick is awarded.

40 mins: I'm pretty certain that there will be changes in the Japanese attacking line-up over the interval, as the current strike pairing are making little impact.

39 mins: A foul on Turkish defender Alpay by Nishizawa in his desperation to meet Alex's cross inside the penalty area.

38 mins: Both Ergun and Tugay are having great games in midfield, with the Blackburn man in particular, bossing midfield.

37 mins: Basturk now breaks with pace down the centre of the Japan half, but his 30-yard low drive fails to skid and really test Narazaki.

36 mins: A good run from Inamoto, but Alpay is covering well to deny him on the edge of the Turkish box.

35 mins: Turkey are not at their fluent best for the time being, but they are looking comfortable at the back against a Japanese side lacking a little bit of imagination.

34 mins: As Sas returns to the field, Japan build down the left through Ono, but their move ends with a poor cross from Koji Nakata that sails behind for a goal-kick.

33 mins: A momentary stop in play as Sas stays down and receives treatment, before leaving the field of play on the trademark stretcher.

32 mins: Tugay plays the ball on to Sukur, but his subsequent pass asks too much of Basturk, enabling Miyamoto to cover and clear.

31 mins: Good defending now from Ergun, as he does well to deny Alex room on the left, before using his strength to come away with the ball.

30 mins: Better football gives the Japanese fans something to shout about, with Alex just unable to beat Rustu to the ball from Tomokazu Myojin on the right.

29 mins: Alex and Ono combine down the left flank, with the latter's swirling cross caught by the impressive Rustu.

28 mins: Japan have not been behind in a game since their opening draw with Belgium. That day, they were in a similar position to how they are now, before scoring twice and conceding an equaliser for a 2-2 draw.

27 mins: Frustration for Japan at the time being as they have just lost their way. Alex is caught offside and Turkey continue to be at ease with the way the game is going.

26 mins: Route one from Turkey for a change as Sukur heads down a long ball for strike-partner Sas, but his powerful first-time shot is always just rising over the bar.

25 mins: Tugay Kerimoglu lofts a ball into the left side of the Japanese area, but Sukur's chipped effort is caught easily by Narazaki just underneath his crossbar.

24 mins: Basturk breaks with pace down the right flank, but his cross is deflected up into the air and finally cleared by Miyamoto.

23 mins: Ono plays a short free-kick to Junichi Inamoto, but it is really poor and the advancing defender slides in to clear before a shot is even hit on goal.

22 mins: A free-kick and the first booking of the game goes against Turkey for Alpay's foul on the marauding Alex, 27 yards from the Turkish goal.

21 mins: Good play from Japan as Nishizawa plays the ball through to Alex down the inside-left channel, but his shot from a tight angle is never going to beat Rustu at his near post.

20 mins: The corner is centred, again looking for Umit, but Ergun's cross is dealt with far better by the Japanese defence.

19 mins: Miyamoto, the masked defender, is forced to flick Basturk's cross behind for a corner with Sukur waiting to power in a what would be his first World Cup finals goal.

18 mins: Conditions may be wet, but they are clearly helping both teams as the temperature and humidity are down as a result. How England would wish for such conditions for their game with Brazil on Friday.

17 mins: A good turn by Sukur on the left by-line, but his cross is well-taken by Narazaki in the Japanese goal.

16 mins: The ball is touched in to Hidetoshi Nakata by Alex, but his cross again flies over the waiting Japanese players inside the Turkish penalty area.

15 mins: Nishizawa, formerly of Bolton, wins a corner for Japan after forcing Hakan Unsal into a fine saving tackle on the right side of the box.

14 mins: Free-kick to Turkey wide on the right. Sas crosses once again, but his delivery is not as good as on the goal, as he overhits his centre and it sails out for a goal-kick.

13 mins: A dream start to the game for Turkey and whilst it has been an even opening to the game, Senol Gunes' side deserved a reward for the bright way that had began the match.

12 mins: GOAL UMIT - A lapse from Koji Nakata as he concedes possession to Hasan Sas, who wins a corner. Ergun curls in the corner and Umit meets the ball with his head from seven yards to head Turkey into the lead.

12 mins: Ono crosses with pace from his right boot, but a fine header from Alpay enables Turkey to clear their lines.

11 mins: Another incisive break from Alex down the left and his cross is deflected into his own side-netting by Alpay for another corner.

10 mins: Alex takes a short corner, playing a one-two with Hidetoshi Nakata, but his deep cross is disappointing and fails to test the Turkish defence.

9 mins: Corner to Japan as Hidetoshi Nakata's cross is turned behind by Ergun.

8 mins: Good passing play from Turkey, who have got into the game well in the early stages.

7 mins: The strike comes in from Umit Davala, who scored in Turkey's last game, but this time he slices his effort dismally high and wide.

6 mins: An ambitious volleyed attempt from Ergun sees him miss the ball completely, but moments later, Kazuyuki Toda is adjudged to have committed a foul in a central position around 30 yards out.

5 mins: Hidetoshi Nakata is caught by a late slide from Alpay to concede a free-kick. Shinji Ono curls in an early ball, but Rustu Recber is alert in the Turkish goal to beat Alex to the cross.

4 mins: Hakan Unsal drifts a long ball towards Hakan Sukur, but it is overhit and runs out for a goal-kick.

3 mins: Neither side is showing any real sign of nerves in the early stages which bodes well for the rest of the match.

2 mins: Yirldiray Basturk goes past Tsuneyasu Miyamoto inside the Japanese area, but he over-runs the ball and Seigo Narazaki bravely slides out to win it.

1 min: Italian referee Pierluigi Collina is in charge of today's game and gets the game started in rainy conditions.

Pre-match: Miyagi is the centrepiece for this afternoon's showdown between two teams looking to reach the last-eight stage of the World Cup finals for the first time. Japan made two team changes with Alex and Akinori Nishizawa replacing Takayuki Suzuki and Atsushi Yanagisawa up front. Turkey lose Emre Asik and Emre Berezoglu, with Ergun Penbe and Alpay coming back into the line-up.
