England midfielder Paul Scholes insists he will be fit to face Brazil and
believes the World Cup quarter-final would be the ideal time to end his England
goal drought.
Scholes missed training on Tuesday to have treatment on a sore foot which led to
him being replaced by Kieron Dyer after 55 minutes of the 3-0 victory over
Denmark in the last 16.
However, the 27-year-old expects to be back in full training ahead of Friday's
clash with the South Americans and told Sky Sports News: "I've had a bit of
trouble in the last couple of days but it's easing up now and I should be ready
to train tomorrow or on Thursday.
"All the players want to play against Brazil. It is a chance to prove
ourselves against the favourites and hopefully we can take it."
Scholes is ready to get back among the goals and admitted: "It's the perfect
game. I know I've not scored for a long time for England. Hopefully it will
change and Friday would be the ideal.
"I've been unlucky and I haven't been getting forward as much as I have done,
the goals haven't come but hopefully it will change,"
Scholes' midfield partnership with Manchester United team-mate Nicky Butt has
been one of England's major strengths in the tournament and Scholes admitted:
"It's working well, not just the two of us but the whole team as a unit is
working well and getting the results we need at the moment.
"He (Butt) is only now starting to get the recognition he deserves. Everybody
who knows him knows what a great player he is."
Scholes shares the view of Brazilians Rivaldo and Roberto Carlos that Friday's
quarter-final could be the 'real' final.
"You never know," he said. "We have done well to get where we are now. It's
a big, big test and if we get through that you never know.
"Beating Argentina has definitely given us confidence to go on."
Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho have already shown their ability to change
games with a moment of magic, but Scholes said: "There are a few on their list
who can just change a game in an instant. It's not just three to watch, there's
11 of them really."
"Obviously they've got great players and I don't think we can afford to think
about them so much, just concentrate on our game."
However, Scholes was encouraged by Belgium's performance against Brazil. He
said: "Belgium did look quite dangerous. Hopefully we can do as well as Belgium
and maybe get the goal that they deserve. It did give us a bit of hope.
"They do leave quite a bit of space at the back and hopefully we have the
players that can cause them problems."
