MEXICO v USA MINUTE-BY-MINUTE
By James Dart, Sportinglife.com
Final score: Mexico 0 USA 2
Man-of-the-match: Sunderland man Claudio Reyna turned in a classy display. Not only did he set up the USA's opening goal, but his resolute defending throughout and tireless running inspired his team on to victory.
90 mins: Full-time in Jeonju and the USA are through to a stunning last-eight place. Tears for Mexico, but the States go on to meet Germany for a place in the semi-finals.
90 mins: A final substitution fron the USA with Mastroeni coming off and Carlos Llamosa replacing him.
90 mins: There will be five minutes of stoppage-time played.
90 mins: Disgraceful tackling from the Mexican side and Jones is caught by horror tackles from both Mercado and Arellano deep in the Mexican half. But amazingly, Jones is seen to have given away a free-kick!
89 mins: A dismissal for a Mexican player was inevitable as their temper was being shown more and more as the half has gone on.
88 mins: RED CARD MARQUEZ - The defender spoils his good tournament with a shocking assault on poor Jones. The defender leads with his boot for a header, catching the USA man in his ribs, and follows through with his head just to make sure. A straight red card is handed out.
87 mins: Mexican heads are lowering as every second goes by and the USA are now on cruise control for the quarter-finals.
86 mins: Lewis curls a deep free-kick that Mercado heads behind. The USA take it short as they play the ball around with ease.
85 mins: Yet another yellow card as Carmona is unable to cope with Donovan's pace as the pair rush for a loose ball and the Mexican player catches the pacy winger's trailing leg.
84 mins: Nine bookings in the match now as Friedel goes into the referee's notebook for apparent timewasting.
83 mins: The stretcher-bearers come on and take Luna off for treatment as Garcia Aspe hits the free-kick into the box, only to see three players offside.
82 mins: Reyna catches Luna on the thigh with a slightly high boot and the Mexicans have a free-kick inside the USA half. Luna looks to be in real pain as he writhes around on the floor.
81 mins: Another booking is dished out by the Portuguese referee as Garcia Aspe slides in to foul Jones with a poor tackle. Tempers are getting frayed.
80 mins: USA coach Arena decides to rest the legs of McBride, who has been tireless in his hard work. On comes Cobi Jones.
79 mins: A change for Mexico as Alberto Garcia Aspe takes to the field and Torrado, a disappointment today, goes off.
78 mins: At the moment it is the USA who look the most like scoring next. Mexico are surely not going to get back into this match now.
77 mins: Sanneh makes a rare charge down the right flank. He pulls a cross back to O'Brien, but his sliced drive fails to come close to the target.
76 mins: The chant of 'When the States Go Marching In' can be heard as the Mexican majority of the crowd begins to lose heart.
75 mins: Blanco hits the corner in with pace, but the USA clear and it looks more and more as if it won't be Mexico's day.
74 mins: A good save from Friedel, who is equal to Carmona's ranging 30-yard drive, fisting it over the bar at a nice height to his right.
73 mins: It's all happening as Borgetti rises to head back across the six-yard box after Blanco's cross, but as Hernandez is unable to do anything with his knockdown, one wonders why the striker did not head for goal.
72 mins: Lewis drifts a deep ball to the far post, where substitute Stewart hits a volley from a tight angle that strikes the outside of the post with Perez looking to have it covered.
71 mins: A dreadful mistake from Perez to a backpass sees him miss the ball and it rolls behind for a corner.
70 mins: Blanco picks himself up to play a cross to Marquez at the far post, but he is unable to get over the ball as he flicks it behind for a goal-kick.
69 mins: A fifth yellow card for the US as Mastroeni fells Blanco around 30 yards from goal.
68 mins: Great football from the USA as a move involving Donovan and McBride tees up a shot for O'Brien, but it flies just over the bar with Perez stretching.
67 mins: A disgraceful dive inside the USA area by Hernandez as he looks to win a penalty, even though Pope's attempted tackle sees his leg miles away from the Mexican player. He is rightly booked.
66 mins: Donovan's goal is just what the Mexicans have needed to do all game, but they have been unable to inject any pace into any of their counters.
65 mins: GOAL DONOVAN - That could do it for the States now, as a great break by Fulham's Lewis down the left flank gets him behind the Mexican defence, and his inch-perfect cross to the back post is headed home very neatly by Donovan.
64 mins: A good tackle by O'Brien as he tracks back to deny Hernandez a shooting chance just outside the USA penalty area.
63 mins: Luna opts to shoot with his left boot, but his effort curls just the wrong side of Friedel's left-hand upright - from an Mexican perspective.
62 mins: A free-kick to Mexico as Berhalter is adjudged to have fouled Borgetti just outside the USA area just to the right of centre.
61 mins: Hernandez looks to get on the end of Blanco's floated pass, but Friedel comes out to punch. The ball falls to Torrado moments later, but his left-footed drive is poor and it flies well wide.
60 mins: Fresh legs up front for the USA as Earnie Stewart comes on for Wolff.
59 mins: Marquez strolls into the USA half, but his attempted pass to Hernandez is poor and after a brief scramble, the US win a free-kick.
58 mins: Another free-kick for Mexico is this time driven in by Marquez, but both Hernandez and Borgetti are unable to leap high enough to get their head on it as the ball flies behind.
57 mins: A good break counter-attack from the USA, finally falls to Reyna around 20 yards out from the Mexican goal, but his first-time shot flies straight at Perez.
56 mins: Luna curls the corner in and O'Brien punches it away - but gets away with the call, much to the astonishment of the Mexican team and bench. The officials must have missed it.
55 mins: Good defending from Berhalter as he concedes a corner from Borgetti's lay-off towards Hernandez. It's all Mexico.
54 mins: A yellow card for Berhalter, who is adjudged to have clashed with a Mexican player as the teams wait for the corner to be centred.
53 mins: The flag-kick is whipped in to the near post by Blanco and a real scramble ensues, ending with Hernandez seeing his shot deflected behind from a tight angle.
52 mins: Berhalter and Hernandez tangle on the right and Mexico have a free-kick in a dangerous spot. Luna curls in a pacy ball that Friedel looks to tip over, but he gets lucky as he tips it onto the bar and over.
51 mins: Mexico look to have pushed Carmona into a more advanced position, but what they really want is for playmaker Torrado to get more involved in the game.
50 mins: Another yellow card for a USA player as Wolff is booked for time-wasting at a throw-in.
49 mins: The shot comes in from Blanco, but it hits the wall about halfway up and his rebound is also blocked.
48 mins: Blanco's cross is poor and Reyna heads out. Arrelano collects on the right and crosses well, forcing Friedel to punch out. McBride then hauls down Carmona just on the edge of the box to concede a free-kick.
47 mins: Mexico win a free-kick out on the left as Mastroeni fouls Blanco. Then, when the defender does not give the ball back, he is booked for dissent.
46 mins: A second substitution from Mexico during the interval with Vidrio leaving the game and Sigifredo Mercado taking his place.
HT: Mexico 0 USA 1
45 mins: The half-time whistle goes after what has been an intriguing first period. Mexico have bossed possession, but the USA have pressed and pressurised superbly when not with the ball. They may not have created many chances, but McBride took his opener very well and Wolff could well have doubled their advantage. Mexico need a rethink during the interval if they are to keep their World Cup dream alive.
44 mins: Sloppy play from both sides as one minute of added-time is signalled for.
43 mins: It looks as though Mexico will be heading into the break 1-0 down and they just have not created enough to warrant getting back on level terms.
42 mins: Both teams look just about ready for a break after a first-half that has been played in an ever-increasing temperature.
41 mins: Blanco picks out Borgetti on the right side just outside the USA area, but his cross towards Hernandez is met by the head of a USA defender.
40 mins: Arrelano looks to cross from the left after Luna threads a pass through to him, but Sanneh not only blocks the effort, but he strolls away with the ball as well.
39 mins: After the recent upsurge in tempo to the game, it has drifted back to a slower pace.
38 mins: 2-0 could well have been too much for Mexico to come back from and they must focus at the back if they are not to let the USA capitalise when they break forward on a rare occasion.
37 mins: A superb save from Perez keeps Mexico in the game. Donovan heads down and Wolff finds space as Carmona plays him onside, but his shot is turned over the bar by the body of the goalkeeper from a 15-yard strike.
36 mins: Manuel Vidrio collects a booking for a high boot that catches Lewis just above his hip.
35 mins: What a scramble in the USA box! Pope concedes possession poorly to Borgetti, whose deflected shot is beaten away by Friedel underneath his bar. The ball falls to Blanco, whose shot under pressure from 14 yards is tipped up by Friedel, and the waiting Hernandez volleys the rebound wide from a tight angle.
34 mins: A good turn from Hernandez on the right side of the USA penalty area, but his cross is poor. The pressure is being wound up by Mexico, though.
33 mins: Blanco curls a ball into the USA penalty area, looking for Borgetti, but Sanneh does well to meet it and head out.
32 mins: Mexico look to break through Hernandez and then Blanco, but on both occasions, the challenge from a USA player is spot on.
31 mins: A good ball through to McBride from O'Brien sees the former Preston man's lay-off towards Donovan just reach Perez in the Mexican goal.
30 mins: Aguirre definitely looks to have made a tactical switch as Hernandez has gone straight up-front alongside Borgetti. He obviously isn't happy with the style his team has been playing in up to now.
29 mins: A substitution for Mexico and it could well be a tactical one as Morales, who comes off, does not appear to be injured. Arriving on the field is Mexico fans' favourite Luis Hernandez.
28 mins: Better moments from Mexico as Gerardo Torrado's shot from 25 yards curls into the arms of Friedel.
27 mins: The first yellow card of the game as he follows through to catch Blanco, moments after the Mexican magician had played the ball off.
26 mins: Room for Blanco for one of the first times in the game and he fires in a 25-yard drive that stings the hands of Friedel, who fists the ball away well low to his right.
25 mins: Mexico probably need to raise the tempo of the game if they can, because the USA will be happy to slow the pace down as much as they can.
24 mins: Luna breaches the USA back-line, but the Mexican midfielder is yards offside and for the time being, Javier Aguirre's side are struggling to find their rhythm.
23 mins: US coach Arena will be delighted with his side's performance at the moment, as they are pressing Mexico excellently when they don't have the ball, giving them little chance to break.
22 mins: At the moment, the game is somewhat like the USA's second group match, when they went ahead against South Korea, despite having less of the possession, and arguably the game. That day, the co-hosts came back to draw 1-1.
21 mins: The USA's turn to play the ball around concisely and they maintain possession throughout the minute.
20 mins: A hefty challenge from Salvador Carmona on Wolff wide on the right flank sees the American go down clutching his ankle, but play goes on. Wolff sheepishly picks himself up.
19 mins: Braulio Luna looks to play in Morales down the Mexican left, but Reyna tracks back superbly to see the ball out for a goal-kick.
18 mins: The USA are still doing most of the chasing out on the field as Mexico pass the ball around in the hot conditions, but this could be to their detriment if they have to do it for 90 minutes.
17 mins: From 30 yards out in a central position, Sunderland star Reyna strikes a disappointing shot low into the Mexican wall.
16 mins: Donovan collects a loose Mexican pass in midfield and sprints with the ball into the US half. He goes down under Marquez's challenge, albeit a little easily, but it's a free-kick to the USA.
15 mins: More patient build-up from the back by Mexico, but they have momentarily lost their way.
14 mins: The best move of the game for Mexico as Borgetti neatly works the ball wide to Morales out on the left. He cuts inside to create space for a shot, but he drags a right-footed effort wide of Friedel's near post, although the Blackburn stopper looked to have it covered.
13 mins: Lewis aims to break down the left from Donovan's pass, but the ball has just too much pace on it as it rolls just out for a goal-kick.
12 mins: A slow tempo to the match for the time being as the USA look to try and get some kind of hold down on the Mexican midfielders to stop the forward supply.
11 mins: What the early goal does set this match up for is to make it an open and entertaining encounter.
10 mins: Mexico are looking to hit back and get on level terms quickly, and they are continuing to build the pressure on the US goal that has only abated once, as McBride fired Arena's team ahead.
9 mins: That goal is a massive shock to Mexico, who had looked in charge during the opening exchanges. But you just can't expect anything in these World Cup finals.
8 mins: GOAL McBRIDE - The first real time that the USA have got out of their own half as Reyna bursts down the right and pulls in a low cross to the near post. Wolff flicks the ball out to Brian McBride, who lashes the ball past Oscar Perez from 10 yards out.
8 mins: Blanco instigates a neat routine, but his chip in towards Arellano sees Tony Sanneh rise highest to head away.
7 mins: A free-kick to the Mexicans in a central location around 40 yards out from the USA goal a O'Brien catches Jared Borgetti.
6 mins: Mexico central defender and captain Rafael Marquez will be hoping to impress some club suitors as reportedly AC Milan and Real Madrid are chasing his services for £20million.
5 mins: The brighter opening has definitely come from the Mexicans, who are being boosted by the majority of the crowd inside the stadium.
4 mins: John O'Brien gives the ball away to Johan Rodriguez and he feeds Jesus Arellano down the inside-right channel. He looks to cross into the box, but Eddie Pope deflects it behind. A short corner is played back to Blanco, whose cross from the by-line is just adjudged to have gone over the line for a goal-kick.
3 mins: Ramon Morales draws the first foul of the game as Claudio Reyna blocks him on the left. Cuauhtemoc Blanco curls the ball in with pace and it evades everyone and Brad Friedel gathers at the second attempt in the USA goal.
2 mins: Neat incisive passing from the Mexicans and they start off as they finished their last game against Italy, playing in a confident and neat style.
1 min: Portuguese referee Vitor Manuel Melo Pereira gets this local derby under way in Jeonju with the winner set to go through and play Germany in the quarter-finals.
Pre-match: Mexico were unchanged from the side that drew so impressively with Italy in their final group game, but the USA were showing four changes in personnel. Their coach Bruce Arena had seen his side lose 3-1 to Poland, yet still sneak into the last 16, and he brought in Gregg Berhalter, Pablo Mastroeni, Eddie Lewis and Josh Wolff. Dropping out of the side were DaMarcus Beasley, Clint Mathis, the injured Jeff Agoos and the suspended Frankie Hejduk.
