Man-of-the-match: The Republic had heroes all over the pitch, but for me Robbie Keane was again a star. He provided their major goal threat along with Duff and held his nerve to net the Irish's crucial late levelling goal.
AET: Republic of Ireland 1 Spain 1
120 mins: The action ends and the victor of the match will be decided in a dramatic penalty finale.
120 mins: A late break from Duff into the Spanish penalty area, but his pull-back just fails to pick out Keane.
119 mins: Puyol attempts a volley from wide on the right, but he slices it off his boot and it flies into the crowd.
118 mins: Tired legs all over the field, but Kilbane tracks back well to tackle the breaking Luque down the right flank.
117 mins: Free-kick to Spain wide on the right. Mendieta floats it into the Irish area, but it is poor and Kilbane boots it away.
116 mins: Luis Enrique is one-on-one with Cunningham just outside the Irish box, but the Spaniard is tired and Cunningham shrugs him off with ease.
115 mins: Cunningham, who has been excellent since coming on, meets Mendieta's cross and enables the Republic of Ireland to clear their lines.
114 mins: Now it's a corner to Spain as Puyol reaches the by-line and Kilbane concedes a corner by blocking his cross.
113 mins: Finnan is adjudged to have fouled Mendieta near the corner flag and Spain have a free-kick. The cross is good, but so is Breen's defending as he heads away.
112 mins: Spain are having the better of the play all of a sudden as they look to have a second wind.
111 mins: Play quickly switches and Connolly's left-footed shot flies inches wide of Casillas' right-hand post. Spain are still alive - but only just.
110 mins: Time is running out for either side to push on and nab a late winner, but Baraja comes close as he darts past a defender before seeing a shot beaten away by Given from 22 yards out.
109 mins: A free-kick in a dangerous spot inside the Irish half for Spain.
108 mins: Another half-chance for Keane as Quinn heads down to the Leeds man, but his 25-yard volley is dragged to the left of Casillas' left-hand post.
107 mins: A 30-yard drive from Keane is deflected over his own bar by the head of Hierro. Corner to the Republic of Ireland.
106 mins: Referee Frisk starts the final period of the match. Will we have a winner before penalties?
ET HT: Republic of Ireland 1 Spain 1
105 mins: That's half-time in extra time. We are now only 15 minutes away from penalties.
105 mins: A rare foray into the Republic half and Luque just gives Ireland a warning as he almost fires in a shot on target inside the box, only for Breen's block to save the day.
104 mins: More pressure from the Republic of Ireland. Duff's cross is only half-cleared to Keane, who turns and sees his shot blocked.
103 mins: Another free-kick wide on the left to the Republic of Ireland as they continue to push on.
102 mins: Kilbane fires in a raking drive from 25 yards out, but Casillas is a relieved man to see it just go over the angle of post and bar.
101 mins: Unlike in regulation time, it is now difficult to see where Spain are going to score from. At the moment, only one team is going to score the golden goal.
100 mins: Duff and Keane look to link up inside the Spanish half, but they are finally outnumbered. It is all Ireland though in this first period of extra time.
99 mins: Corner to the Republic of Ireland as Kilbane gets in behind the unaware Luis Enrique before playing the ball of the Spaniard and behind. The deep flag-kick picks out Breen, but he in turn can't get his header to a team-mate.
98 mins: A sterling challenge from Cunningham as he slides in to dispossess Luque as he surges into the Republic of Ireland half.
97 mins: Duff causes mayhem inside the Republic box, but his cross is eventually smuggled away by Helguera.
96 mins: The corner from Mendieta is poor, but he gets a chance to redeem himself with a curling effort as he cuts in from the left, but he sends his effort wide of Given's goal with the goalkeeper comfortably having it covered.
95 mins: Mendieta breaks down the left flank, but his low cross is disappointing. Ireland fail to clear though and end up conceding a corner.
94 mins: The Republic of Ireland keep hitting long balls towards Quinn, who really has the Spanish defence riled.
93 mins: Another free-kick to Spain as Luis Enrique goes down under a soft challenge from Kilbane. It is swung in, but the Irish clear after a brief scramble inside their penalty area.
92 mins: An early free-kick to the Spaniards wide on the left, but have they taken off too many of their attacking players to cause the Republic problems during extra time?
91 mins: Both sides have made three substitutions, so it will be down to the 22 men left on the field to win or lose this match. Next goal wins.
After 90 minutes: Republic of Ireland 1 Spain 1
90 mins: The full-time whistle goes and we have golden goal extra time for the second time in one day. It's been another dramatic last-gasp finale for the Irish, but as mentioned earlier, you just never can write them off.
90 mins: If the match heads into extra time, the bad news for Spain is that both Morientes and Raul have been taken off.
90 mins: Four minutes of stoppage-time are added on.
90 mins: For the second time in these finals, Keane and Quinn have rescued the Irish in the final minute of the game. It was a brave decision from referee Frisk, but Hierro did almost have the shirt off Quinn's back.
90 mins: GOAL KEANE - It's 1-1 in the final moments once again as the Leeds man leaves Casillas rooted to the spot.
89 mins: A second penalty for the Republic of Ireland as Hierro is adjudged to have tugged shirt of Quinn in the Spanish box from Finnan's floated free-kick. Hierro is booked.
88 mins: It's all route one stuff from the Irish now as they continue to loft long balls forward to Quinn.
87 mins: A first yellow card of the game is shown to Baraja for kicking the ball away to waste time.
86 mins: The Republic of Ireland are finishing the game well as they look for a last-gasp leveller. Meanwhile, Albelda attempts a 50-yard lob that fails to test Given.
85 mins: Both the goalkeeper and Keane stay down after colliding in the follow-through after the striker's attempt on goal.
84 mins: Keane gets a chance to draw the Republic of Ireland level as the Leeds man gets on the end of a knockdown from Quinn. But unlike his goal against Germany, Casillas is out quickly to block Keane's effort.
83 mins: Connolly is the man to come on for his World Cup finals bow and it is Harte, who missed the earlier penalty, that makes way for the Wimbledon man.
82 mins: On comes Albert Luque for Spain as Raul, who picked up a knock a few minutes ago, takes his leave. Luque gets an early chance from a narrow angle, but he shoots weakly into the side-netting.
81 mins: Duff comes close to levelling, but his drive from 25 yards out swerves just wide of Casillas' right-hand upright, althouth the 'keeper looked to have it covered.
80 mins: Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy has one more throw of the dice regarding substitutes and David Connolly or Clinton Morrison could come on.
79 mins: Harte strikes his shot well, but, as it flies straight towards Casillas in the Spanish goal, Keane gets a head to it only to re-direct the ball well over the crossbar.
78 mins: A free-kick to the Republic around 30 yards from goal as Quinn wins it from Helguera's foul.
77 mins: Raul almost gets in between Breen and Cunningham at the back, but the latter does well to flick back to Given.
76 mins: Spain maintain possession superbly and their move ends as Mendieta is caught by the leg of Finnan for a free-kick.
75 mins: Steve Finnan is now getting forward more down the right and he lays the ball back for Duff, whose deep cross towards Quinn sees the veteran striker foul Puyol to concede a free-kick.
74 mins: It's difficult to see where the Republic of Ireland are going to level from as their earlier penalty did come somewhat out of the blue. But they will never stop trying and will keep battling to the last.
73 mins: Given again denies Raul from close range as a scramble in the Irish box falls to the feet of the talismanic striker in the six-yard box, but his prod at the ball fails to beat the legs of Given as the Irish escape.
72 mins: Movement down on the Spanish bench and it is David Albelda of Valencia who comes on in place of goalscorer Morientes.
71 mins: Time continues to run down for the Republic of Ireland. Can they bag another dramatic late equalising goal to keep their World Cup dream alive?
70 mins: Harte's delivery is alright, but Hierro meets it first once again as Spain clear their lines.
69 mins: The Republic of Ireland have a free-kick wide on the left and they are able to bring their big men up from the back.
68 mins: Raul curls the ball past Given into the net, but yet again, a correct offside decision denies Spain the goal.
67 mins: Spain almost benefit from Mendieta's arrival immediately as he gets the run of the ball down the left and turns in an early cross that just evades the head of Morientes.
66 mins: Mendieta's introduction is an interesting move tactically by Camacho as he looks to help out defender Juanfran on the left against the threat of Duff.
65 mins: A substitution for Spain as Gaizka Mendieta comes on in place of De Pedro.
64 mins: Agony for the thousands of Irish fans inside the Suwon stadium and watching around the world, but they can take heart from Duff's impressive run at the Spanish defence. For Harte, his disappointing finals continues.
63 mins: Harte takes the penalty, but Casillas pulls off an easy save at a nice height. Kilbane then has the chance to volley the follow up into an unguarded net, but he slices his effort horribly.
61 mins: Penalty to the Republic of Ireland as Duff goes at Juanfran recklessly chops down the Blackburn man.
60 mins: Duff skips past two players on the right and sees his floated cross towards Quinn met by a good header from Hierro.
59 mins: Play is currently taking place in the Republic of Ireland half as Spain keep their opponents just where they want them.
58 mins: A corner to Spain as Cunningham slices the ball behind. De Pedro's centre is met by the free head of Hierro around ten yards out, but Quinn gets in his way and the Real Madrid man fails to find the target.
57 mins: Harte and Kilbane look to build from the back, but the latter loses the ball and Spain have possession inside the Irish half. They are unable to create anything, though.
56 mins: Still no yellow cards in what has been a game played in a good nature from both sides.
55 mins: That is Kelly's last action of the game as he is replaced by striker Quinn as the Irish look for that vital equaliser.
54 mins: Good moments for the Republic of Ireland as they build pressure on the Spanish penalty area. Kelly again finds space on the right side of the box, but instead of a shot, he cuts back and sends in a poor cross with the outside of his right boot.
53 mins: Kelly floats a ball into the Spanish area, but the ever-reliable Hierro is on hand to clear with Keane poised to scissor-kick the ball home.
52 mins: It looks as though Quinn could be set to come on to bolster the Republic's forward line.
51 mins: Harte takes the corner, but Helguera is the man underneath it as he launches it out of his own box.
50 mins: Puyol collides with Casillas as the goalkeeper looks to catch a high ball. It falls to Kilbane, whose shot on target is diverted over the bar by Hierro for a corner.
49 mins: A substitution from the Republic of Ireland as their skipper Staunton leaves the game with an apparent knock and Kenny Cunningham comes on.
48 mins: A real chance for Spain to go 2-0 ahead as Raul backheels the ball through to Morientes, who sees Given race out and block his shot well.
47 mins: If the scoreline remains 1-0 to Spain, it will be interesting to see how long McCarthy waits to introduce his secret weapon - or not so secret - tall striker Niall Quinn.
46 mins: The second half begins with no changes in personnel made by either team.
HT: Republic of Ireland 0 Spain 1
45 mins: As the half-time whistle sounds, it sends the teams off with Spain clearly the happier of the two. They have broken with pace and purpose, something that a tired-looking Republic of Ireland side have been unable to match. But write the Irish off at your peril. They have been in this situation against both Cameroon and Germany - there are 45 minutes remaining.
45 mins: Two more minutes will be played in this first half.
44 mins: Brighter signs from the Irish as they look to end the period on a high, possibly even snatching a late leveller to go into the break with.
43 mins: A real chance for Keane as Holland's delightful ball through sees the Leeds man break the offside trap, but the ball just won't drop for him and he flicks it over both the advancing Casillas and the Spanish bar.
42 mins: The left boot of De Pedro delivers well from the right, but Kilbane gets his head to the ball to clear.
41 mins: Nervy defending from Staunton, whose attempted header back towards Given with Raul lurking flies behind for a corner to Spain.
40 mins: Once again, Raul has the ball in the net, but the offside flag is up yet again to chalk off his lobbed goal after he broke clear to meet Morientes' pass.
39 mins: Valeron chips the ball through to Valeron, who is caught offside on a very, very tight call. Sooner or later, the Irish will be caught out by their trap.
38 mins: Good build-up from the Republic of Ireland, but there is a notable lack of pace when they break compared to the speed of Spanish counters.
37 mins: Again, Raul is caught offside by the Republic defence and he is growing increasingly frustrated at his inability to break the trap.
36 mins: Harte hits his corner deep this time, but Spain are dominant in the air and Helguera meets it with his head on this occasion.
35 mins: A sloppy back header from Hierro goes behind for a corner that is quickly taken by the Irish. They take it short and eventually work it into Duff, who wins another flag-kick off Puyol.
34 mins: Room to cross for Morientes wide on the left, but he fails to pick out Raul in the centre and Given collects.
33 mins: Duff reaches the left by-line for one of the first times in the game, but his pull-back is met by Hierro ahead of Keane.
32 mins: Raul plays in De Pedro down the left flank, but he stands up a ball that Raul, not the tallest of strikers, has no chance of connecting with.
31 mins: Not enough play is going through Duff and Keane for the Republic of Ireland at the moment as Spain are doing very well across the midfield to snuff out the supply to the dangerous front duo.
30 mins: De Pedro's curled corner is cleared back to him. He sends in a deep cross towards Hierro at the far post, but Matt Holland dives in with a crucial header to avert the danger.
29 mins: The Republic are caught on the break through a quick counter through Luis Enrique and Staunton slices the ball over his own bar to concede a corner with Raul and Morientes on his shoulder.
28 mins: A pacy break from Juanfran, but Kelly is right on him and challenges well to win the ball fairly.
27 mins: Space for Luis Enrique, but his attempted pass through to Morientes is disappointing and overhit through to Given.
26 mins: When play finally restarts, Staunton comes back onto the field, to the relief of Republic of Ireland fans.
25 mins: Steve Staunton was left in the wake of that last Spanish move and he receives treatment on the deck.
24 mins: Spain have the ball in the net after a fantastic move from Morientes and Raul. The latter heads down to Luis Enrique, who knocks the ball past Given and into the net. As he runs off to celebrate, the offside flag is raised and Spain are denied a wondrous goal.
23 mins: A good cross from Kilbane wide on the left, but Helguera meets it to head upfield.
22 mins: Better play from Spain as they continue to pass the ball around well, but again they are caught by a well-organised Republic offside trap.
21 mins: Baraja almost threads an astute through-ball to Raul, but Staunton holds the striker off and Given advances to complete the clearance.
20 mins: Spanish coach Camacho is clearly unhappy with the way his team are playing at the moment as he passes his orders onto the field.
19 mins: It has been the Republic of Ireland on top in the last five minutes, but for the most part, Spain's defence is coping pretty well with them, keeping them to long-range shooting.
18 mins: The lively Keane turns around 30 yards from goal and just slices his snapshot as it flies well wide of Casillas' goal.
17 mins: Casillas comes flying out to punch away a cross from Duff, but Hierro beats him to it as communication breaks down in the Spanish defence.
16 mins: Spain do look quite comfortable, but since going ahead, they have sat back somewhat and the Irish are pressing.
15 mins: It looks as if Keane is free inside the Spanish area, but he is offside and Spain get a let-off.
14 mins: Good work from Damien Duff down the right and he plays the ball inside to Mark Kinsella. The Charlton man takes a touch before firing a rising shot over the crossbar.
13 mins: Kilbane curls a deep cross from the left, but he overhits it and it flies just over Casillas' goal for a goal-kick.
12 mins: Raul is attracting a lot of attention from the Republic defence, but this is creating plenty of space for his club-mate Morientes, as happened with the goal.
11 mins: Patient passing build-up from the Republic of Ireland, but their final ball is poor and Keane loses possession.
10 mins: Morientes' strike is his third goal of the tournament and just the start that Spain wanted to the game. Now the onus is on the Republic to hit back, but they have already done that against Cameroon and Germany earlier in the finals.
9 mins: A poor goal to give away from the Republic's perspective as Puyol should not have been allowed to get such easy space to send his cross in from the right touchline.
8 mins: GOAL MORIENTES - The Real Madrid man meets Puyol's fine cross from the right and he heads low past Given ahead of his marker Gary Breen.
8 mins: Irish boss McCarthy will be glad that his side have not been overawed in the opening stages for they have at least matched Spain stride for stride in the early exchanges.
7 mins: The first corner of the game goes to the Republic of Ireland as De Pedro turns Gary Kelly's cross behind. It is taken short by Ian Harte to Kelly, but Puyol does well to block his attempted centre and clear.
6 mins: There's a really good atmosphere inside the stadium and now that the games have reached the knockout stage, the evening matches are really providing a great showpiece.
5 mins: It's been a bright opening to the game from both sides and Morientes sees his looping header caught by Shay Given just underneath his crossbar.
4 mins: A good run from Robbie Keane finds him some space just outside the left corner of the Spanish box, but his curled effort flies just around the far post of goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
3 mins: Spain break for the first time in the game and Raul wastes a good chance to release Fernando Morientes as Steve Staunton makes a good tackle.
2 mins: Referee Frisk has some stern words for Puyol for a tough tackle on Kevin Kilbane. Free-kick to the Irish.
1 min: Game on, as the Republic's big night in Suwon begins under the officiating of referee Anders Frisk of Sweden.
Pre-match: Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy stayed loyal to the eleven players that started the last group game against Saudi Arabia on a warm night in Suwon. The stadium was packed with Irish fans comfortably outnumbering those from Spain to create a great atmosphere for the Republic of Ireland side to play in. Real Madrid's Ivan Helguera held on to his spot in the centre of the Spanish defence as Fernando Hierro returned to the team. Miguel Nadal dropped down to the bench. Elsewhere, Spain coach Jose Antonio Camacho made six other changes to the team that started against South Africa with Garcia Juanfran, Cedric Puyol, Luis Enrique, Juan Valeron, Ruben Baraja and Francisco De Pedro all coming back into the starting line-up.
