SWEDEN v SENEGAL MINUTE-BY-MINUTE
By James Dart, Sportinglife.com
Final score: Sweden 1 Senegal 2 (AET)
Man-of-the-match: Camara was the hero with Senegal's goals, but El Hadji Diouf showed just why is currently the African Player of the Year and why Liverpool have shelled out for him. He was skilful, pacy and lively, causing problems for the Swedish defence throughout.
104 mins: GOAL CAMARA - It's all over and joy for Senegal as the forward cuts inside a tired Swedish tackle before shooting a scuffed effort past Hedman and in off the post from the edge of the Sweden area. Heartbreak for Sweden, who came within inches of glory themselves, but unconfined joy for Senegal, who advance to the last eight.
103 mins: El Hadji Diouf almost breaks clear, but it is well overhit to Hedman.
102 mins: A brave header from Coly with Larsson waiting to pounce inside the Senegal area from Andersson's tempting cross.
101 mins: Sweden make a substitution with Magnus Svensson coming off and Mattias Jonson giving their midfield some fresh legs.
100 mins: Senegal could be set for a second change in personnel with Thiaw possibly replaced by Souleymane Camara.
99 mins: This has been a brilliant first period of golden goal extra-time - just how the format should be played with both teams really going for glory.
98 mins: A chance for El Hadji Diouf to win it as he goes past Mellberg on the left side of the Sweden area, but fires his shot across goal and out for a goal-kick.
97 mins: More magical skill from Larsson wide on the right as he ghosts past three defenders before finally being stopped by Coly in the area.
96 mins: Anders Svensson almost scores a majestic winner as he turns with an exquisite drag-back inside the Senegalese area before striking the top of the post. How unlucky for the Swedes.
95 mins: A booking for Thiaw as he makes far too much of contact with Mjallby inside the Sweden penalty area. Simulation costs him a yellow card.
94 mins: Faye runs through the Sweden half and unleashes a powerful effort that is just always rising over Hedman's goal.
93 mins: A scramble in the Senegal box as Larsson turns the ball across to Anders Svensson, but he is unable to direct an effort on goal under pressure from Diatta.
92 mins: El Hadji Diouf collects a stray pass from Andersson and breaks down the left. He plays the ball to Thiaw, but as he cuts inside onto his right foot, he fires a shot high and wide of Hedman's goal.
91 mins: Both sides have taken on plenty of liquids as the stifling heat inside the stadium continues to drain them. Senegal will hope to call on their experience in the African Nations final when they had golden goal extra-time against Cameroon before losing on penalties.
After 90 minutes: Sweden 1 Senegal 1
90 mins: Full-time in Oita and for the first time at these finals, we're set for extra-time. A golden goal will settle matters, but if no-one scores in the next 30 minutes, then the dreaded penalty shootout will be called upon to decide who advances to the quarter-finals.
90 mins: There will be three minutes of added-time.
89 mins: Thiaw meets Habeye's cross from out on the right touchline, but his header from 14 yards drifts wide of Hedman's right-hand upright.
88 mins: A little more urgency now from Senegal, who break with pace through El Hadji Diouf. His run is finally ended in the Sweden box by Mjallby's challenge.
87 mins: Another good chance for Ibrahimovic as Anders Svensson crosses from the left. The Ajax man is free at the back post after Larsson misses the ball, but he fails to get the ball under control, letting it run right past him. What a chance!
86 mins: It has been a disappointing second half after what had been an entertaining clash earlier.
85 mins: We were in a similar position to this on Saturday in the Germany-Paraguay game when extra-time looked a certainty before the Germans snatches a late winner. Could their be a repeat performance today.
84 mins: Both teams look pretty tired and resumed to a potential extra 30 minutes and possibly even penalties.
83 mins: Senegal's play is becoming ragged and the prospect of golden goal extra-time is looming large.
82 mins: Sylva comes out well to catch Anders Svensson's corner and Senegal can breathe a sigh of relief for the time being.
81 mins: The best chance of the second half sees Ibrahimovic break into the right side of the Senegal area after Coly falls. He cuts outside and inside a defender, but with Larsson free in the centre, he opts to shoot selfishly and Sylva turns the ball behind at the near post.
80 mins: After seeing his corner cleared, the ball falls again to El Hadji Diouf, who races into the box only to see his cut-back strike a defender.
79 mins: Andersson hopes to play the ball through towards Ibrahimovic, but Sylva races out to win the ball and set Senegal on a break of themselves that ends with El Hadji Diouf winning a corner down the left.
78 mins: Pressure is building from Senegal, but will they be able to break the deadlock before full-time?
77 mins: A second substitution is made by Sweden's dual coaches as Ajax forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic replaces Alexandersson.
76 mins: Free-kick to Senegal wide on the right in the Sweden half as Mjallby fells El Hadji Diouf with a clumsy challenge. The cross from the Liverpool man falls at the feet of Thiaw, but his attempted shot deflects of Mellberg and behind for a corner.
75 mins: Camara's run down the left ends with his cross-shot floating onto the roof of Hedman's goal.
74 mins: A first booking of the game and it is a deserved one as Coly catches Magnus Svensson from behind with a poor tackle.
73 mins: Larsson plays the ball on to Andersson on the right side of the Senegalese penalty area, but the substitute's shot is high and very wide.
72 mins: Senegal substitute Beye breaks down the right flank, but with El Hadji Diouf waiting in the penalty area, Beye's cross is overhit.
71 mins: Andersson hooks the ball back from the by-line, but Larsson fails to pick out Anders Svensson with his nod down. Magnus Svensson then bursts to the line as Sweden pick the ball back up, but Sylva is alert to come out and collect.
70 mins: Good defending from Diatta as he sees the ball out for a goal-kick under pressure from substitute Andersson.
69 mins: In comes the corner from the right, but El Hadji Diouf's centre fails to pick out any of his tall team-mates in the box.
68 mins: El Hadji Diouf is the man to take the shot, but Hedman tips it over comfortably even though it appeared to be going over.
67 mins: A free-kick for Senegal in a dangerous position just outside the Sweden area as Jakobsson is adjudged to have leapt all over El Hadji Diouf, who uses his nous to win the call.
66 mins: The game has just lost some of its rhythm in the last couple of minutes, but Senegal are still enjoying more possession.
65 mins: Pape Malick Diop is forced to go off with substitute Habib Beye having to take his place in defence.
64 mins: An injury worry for Senegal as the stretcher-bearers are forced to take Pape Malick Diop from the field for the time being after he picks up a knock.
63 mins: Andersson does come on in place of Allback, who has been pretty disappointing up front.
62 mins: It looks as though Andreas Andersson is set to come on and replace Allback in attack for Sweden. Coly breaks for Senegal and crosses deep to the back post to El Hadji Diouf, who is lucky to escape a yellow card for attempting to turn the ball into the net with his hand.
61 mins: Daf does well to reach the by-line and pull the ball back into the box to Thiaw, but his shot with the outside of his boot fails to fly anywhere near the target.
60 mins: Into the final third of regulation time and given how open the match has been so far, it would be surprise not to see another goal before full-time.
59 mins: Sweden have a free-kick on the left just outside the Senegal box after Allback goes down. Anders Svensson whips the cross in, but it is disappointing and Bouba Diop heads away.
58 mins: Larsson nods the ball down for Anders Svensson, who meets the ball on the volley but it flies wide of Sylva's right-hand post.
57 mins: Teddy Lucic and Hedman allows Diatta to nip in ahead of the two of them, but his touch takes the ball straight out for a goal-kick.
56 mins: Their is a nice pace to the game at the moment with play swinging from end to end. Now it is Senegal who are pressuring with Coly almost getting on the end of El Hadji Diouf's astute short pass inside the Sweden area.
55 mins: Room for Larsson on the left side of the Senegal area behind Coly, but his early shot is weak and it rolls through to Sylva.
54 mins: Coly makes a surging run down the right flank, but his bid for glory ends as Mjallby sticks out a leg and wins the ball.
53 mins: A throw for Senegal deep inside the Sweden half on the left. Faye plays the ball back to Daf, whose cross is headed away by Jakobsson.
52 mins: One of Sweden's best moves of the game ends with a cross from the right picking out Allback on the volley, but he shoots into the ground and Sylva can save easily.
51 mins: Faye and Camara combine down the left flank and the latter's inside pass picks out El Hadji Diouf inside the Sweden box. However, the new Liverpool man's first touch is unusually poor and Sweden are able to clear through Mellberg.
50 mins: A free-kick to Sweden as Coly fouls Larsson wide on the left. It is taken short, but after some incisive passing, Alexandersson's shot from 25 yards is sliced disappointingly wide from a central location.
49 mins: Cisse stays down after collecting an attempted pass painfully in his groin.
48 mins: Possession play from Senegal, who have grown in stature as this game has worn on. Their defensive frailties at the back will worry coach Metsu, though.
47 mins: Allback and Anders Svensson link up with a neat one-two, but the latter's shot from 22 yards out is low and straight at Sylva, who gathers comfortably.
46 mins: The second half gets under way with the temperature in Oita showing no sign of decreasing. No changes have been made by either side.
HT: Sweden 1 Senegal 1
45 mins: Half-time and it's honours even. A good first period has seen Senegal bounce back from their early deficit with an attacking performance that has seen them deservedly pull level. El Hadji Diouf has been on top form down the left flank and Sweden will have to keep him under guard if they are not to fall behind in the second half.
44 mins: Senegal win a corner, but El Hadji Diouf's deep flag-kick to Baba Dioup sees their top scorer in these finals head well over the bar under pressure.
43 mins: Anders Svensson curls a good effort around the wall, but unlike Argentina stopper Pablo Cavallero who was unable to stop the Southampton man's free-kick in the group stages, Sylva makes a flying save - one for the photographers.
42 mins: A free-kick to Sweden around 30 yards from goal on the inside-right position. Larsson and Anders Svensson stand behind it.
41 mins: Superb persistent play from Amdy Faye down the left flank and his measured cross picks out Camara on the penalty spot, but he fails to direct his free header on target as it goes well wide of Hedman's goal.
40 mins: Three Swedish defenders can't stop El Hadji Diouf on the left flank and as he cuts inside onto his right foot, he unleashes a rising shot that keeps going up as it flies over the crossbar.
39 mins: Neither side will want to give anything away before the break, but it is the Senegalese who are continuing to press forward.
38 mins: Camara's excellent strike is just what Senegal have deserved and it sets this second-round match up nicely at 1-1.
37 mins: GOAL CAMARA - A great finish from Camara as he collects the ball around 22 yards out on his chest, takes a touch, and fires a shot diagonally across Hedman and into the back of the net.
36 mins: Scrappy play from both teams on this baking hot day in Oita.
35 mins: More trickery from El Hadji Diouf as he nutmegs Linderoth, but Magnus Svensson eases him off the ball and it runs out for a goal-kick to Sweden.
34 mins: Allback and Daf clash inside the Senegal area, but the Villa player goes down too easily and the ball runs out for a goal-kick.
33 mins: More pressure from Senegal as El Hadji Diouf wins a corner, this time after work down the right. Bouba Diop leaps to head Camara's header over the bar with Hedman comfortably covering the effort.
32 mins: Camara's cross is met by the head of Magnus Svensson, who rises well for someone who is not the tallest of players.
31 mins: Senegal win a corner on the right as Ferdinand Coly's cross is deflected behind.
30 mins: El Hadji Diouf is causing Mellberg a lot of problems down the Senegal left, but his team-mates in the Sweden box have yet to take advantage of his good delivery.
29 mins: Sweden are being forced further and further onto the back foot, but their defence has looked pretty solid throughout the tournament so far, and they will be confident of preserving a clean sheet.
28 mins: A freshly-bandaged Alexandersson returns to the field as El Hadji Diouf twists and turns inside the Swedish area, before being crowded out by three defenders.
27 mins: Building pressure from Senegal, who will count themselves unlucky not to be on level terms after the questionable calls not to award them a penalty and a goal.
26 mins: A deep cross from Allback, but Larsson is not up with play so no-one is on hand to meet his cross from a Swedish perspective.
25 mins: No goal to Senegal despite Papa Bouba Diop turning El Hadji Diouf's cross into the net from close range. Offside is the call, but replays show the call was debatable.
24 mins: Alexandersson is forced to leave the field for treatment to a head injury that is gushing blood.
23 mins: Beyond the halfway stage in the opening period and Sweden will clearly be the happier side to be on top in Oita at the moment, but Senegal are coming into the game more and more.
22 mins: A free-kick to Senegal just inside the Swedish half gives them the chance to build, but Cisse's pass towards Lamine Diatta goes astray and Johan Mjallby heads clear.
21 mins: Pape Malick Diop's careless defending sees him tackled by Magnus Svensson, but his subsequent cross towards Larsson is too close to Sylva and the Monaco stopper comes out to catch.
20 mins: Signs of life from Senegal since they fell behind to Larsson's goal and perhaps now they are starting to throw off the nervy shackles that hampered their early play.
19 mins: The ball is crossed by El Hadji Diouf and when Magnus Svensson clears upfield to Aliou Cisse, the Birmingham target's 35-yard swerver slices wide of Hedman's left-hand post.
18 mins: A corner for Senegal after good work from Henri Camara down the right flank.
17 mins: Allback almost nips in behind the Senegal defence, but he adjudged to have been in an offside position when Larsson flicked the ball on towards him.
16 mins: A very ambitious effort from Daf flies well wide of Hedman's goal from fully 35 yards out.
15 mins: El Hadji Diouf goes down under a physical shoulder barge from Jakobsson inside the Sweden area after a jinking run, but no penalty is awarded by the referee. I have seen them given for less, though.
14 mins: The big worry for Senegal coach Metsu was his defence after it capitulated to let Uruguay storm back from 3-0 down to claim a draw in their last match. Their frailties at the back have again been highlighted here.
13 mins: A chance to hit back quickly for Senegal as El Hadji Diouf curls in a swirling free-kick from the left that fails to beat the head of first defender Mellberg.
12 mins: Sweden have been threatening in the opening minutes and the Senegalese defence is looking very nervous.
11 mins: GOAL LARSSON - A simple opener for the Swedes as Anders Svensson's corner is met by the Celtic hitman in front of Sylva just six yards out from goal, and his downward header nestles in the back of the net.
10 mins: A first chance of the game for Senegal as Thiaw gets on the end of Pape Malick Diop's pass, but the ball just won't sit down for him and he strikes a shot tamely over Magnus Hedman's bar.
9 mins: New Aston Villa signing Marcus Allback finds himself in space on the right flank, but instead of crossing to the waiting Larsson, he delays and the chance is gone as he is crowded out.
8 mins: El Hadji Diouf is pressed deep inside his own area by good work from Andreas Jakobsson.
7 mins: A bright opening for dual Swedish coaches Tommy Soderberg and Lars Lagerback's side and they are definitely having the better of the early exchanges.
6 mins: A real scare for the Senegalese defence and they will need to regain their focus and settle down into the game, something they have yet to do.
5 mins: Sweden come close to opening the scoring as a short free-kick move to Olof Mellberg on the right side of the Senegal area sees the Villa defender's first-time shot kept out by the boot of Sylva, and Henrik Larsson is unable to turn the rebound on target from a tight angle on the left.
4 mins: As the ball is only half-cleared by the Senegal defence, Tobias Linderoth's powerful 30-yard drive flies straight at Sylva, who gathers comfortably.
3 mins: Senegal goalkeeper Tony Sylva is forced to come out and hack the ball into the stands after a through-ball from Magnus Svensson.
2 mins: An early free-kick for Senegal inside their own half as Niclas Alexandersson fouls Omar Daf.
1 min: Paraguayan referee Ubaldo Aquino gets the action under way inside the Big Eye Stadium in Oita.
Pre-match: The only change made by either side from their last group game line-ups was from Senegal coach Bruno Metsu. Pape Thiaw came in for Alassane Ndour. For Sweden, key midfielder Fredrik Ljungberg failed to recover from injury in time to make the game.
