Henrik Larsson quit the international scene on a day when the football world hailed a new golden star in Henri Camara.

After 72 caps and 24 goals, Celtic striker Larsson decided to call it a day with Sweden following their shock 2-1 extra-time exit from the World Cup at the hands of African sensations Senegal.

Larsson is likely to be joined in retirement by his Celtic team-mate Johan Mjallby, although Sweden's captain is to give his position more thought while on holiday over the next few weeks rather than make any hasty announcement.

For Larsson, there would appear to be no turning back for in the quiet of the Sweden dressing room in which Marcus Allback conceded you could hear a pin drop, the 30-year-old walked up to coach Lars Lagerback and bid a fond farewell.

Larsson shook Lagerback by the hand and said: "That was my last goal and my last game. Thank you very much for the time I have spent with Sweden."

Lagerback is certain Larsson's declaration was not made in the heat of the moment and he stated: "I don't believe in trying to talk someone round."

Co-coach Tommy Soderberg is hoping Larsson will change his mind as he commented: "It is how he is feeling right now, but he might have second thoughts."

It was Larsson who headed Sweden in front in the 11th minute with his third goal of the tournament as Sweden, who had emerged as winners of the 'Group of Death', made a lively start against the Lions of Teranga.

But the searing heat at Oita's Big Eye Stadium, with the pitchside temperature close to 100 degrees fahrenheit, appeared to take its toll on the ice-cool Swedes.
