Sorensen - not keen on England's chances (Allsport)
SORENSEN: ENGLAND MUST BE BRAZIL-LIANT
By John Curtis, PA Sport, Niigata
England have been warned by Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen that they will
have to raise their game to have a chance of beating Brazil if they meet in the
quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Sven-Goran Eriksson's side cruised into the last eight thanks to a 3-0 victory
over the Danes with Liverpool duo Michael Owen and Emile Heskey among the
scorers.
But Sorensen, who put a close-range header from Rio Ferdinand into his own
net, insists England have to get better if the want to progress much further in
the tournament.
They will meet the Brazilians on Friday at Shizuoka - providing the four-times
champions overcome Belgium in Kobe on Monday.
Sunderland goalkeeper Sorensen said: "I thought it was a bit too easy for
England today and they didn't really have to prove too much.
"They had an easy start with two goals and they could just defend. I thought
they were maybe a bit too defensive but then again when you lead 2-0 you don't
have to score.
"England are a good team - but they will have to play better than against us
if they want to get far in this tournament.
"I think you will find they will have a lot more problems against Brazil, if
they play them, then we gave them.
"But we still created a lot of chances and with a bit of luck we could have
scored two or three goals.
"I think they can do better. I think David Beckham will probably get better.
I don't think he is 100 0.000000it."
Sorensen held his hands and took the blame for the first goal.
He said: "As a goalkeeper you make mistakes sometimes and it was sad for me
but I've got the character to come back. It happens to all keepers and you just
hold your hand up and then get on with it.
"We made some mistakes and at this level they (England) have the qualities to
make you suffer.
"But I still think we played really well and created a lot of chances but
when we had them luck was not on our side.
"We had a chance at 2-0 and if that had gone in then it is a different game.
We all believed we could win and we believed we could come back during the game
but it wasn't enough."
Denmark coach Morten Olsen admitted individual errors cost his team dear. A
Sorensen error gave Rio Ferdinand the first goal in only the fifth minute and,
after Michael Owen made it two, Niclas Jensen's mistake gifted Emile Heskey
number three.
"I thought we reacted well after conceding the two early goals, but then we
conceded again and that was that," said Olsen.
"To get three goals back against the English is nearly impossible.
"I thought we played very well in the second half and we came across some
good chances.
"From my point of view, we played a good game but made a couple of
mistakes."
