WE DESERVED TO GO THROUGH - REYNA
United States captain Claudio Reyna believes his side deserved their place in
the second round even though they lost 3-1 to Poland.
In the end the US clinched second spot in the group after South Korea beat
Portugal 1-0 in Incheon.
"We have been a bit unlucky in the past but today we got our bit of luck,"
he said.
"Plenty of other teams went through with just four points so we will settle
for that.
"Italy, one of the biggest teams in the world, needed luck to get through so
we will take it. Overall I think we deserved our place."
However, the Sunderland midfielder was grateful for the contribution of the
co-hosts.
"We are through tonight, not because we won, but because of what Korea did,"
he said.
"We owe them a big thanks. It was not a great way to go through, but we are
through and that is what matters."
USA coach Bruce Arena said: "Nobody would have picked the results in this
group, Poland played well but our guys never quit.
"The results throughout the tournament have been amazing, I would be crazy to
dare pick a winner because there will be plenty more surprises to come. Who can
believe the quality teams already at home.
"To go 2-0 down to a team of Poland's ability in such a short time, we knew it
was going to be a battle," he said.
"But my players never gave up and I was pleased with that."
Penalty-saving goalkeeper Brad Friedel added: "On days like this it's better to be lucky.
"We didn't plan that first five minutes but you have to give Poland credit
for a much better performance.
"I personally thought Portugal would beat Korea, but it didn't happen and we
are through to play a country we know inside out.
"But please don't forget what a very great day this is for USA soccer and a
very lucky day too."
The States face Mexico next in Jeonju on Monday, a team they have regularly
beaten in the past, while Korea's debatable prize for finishing top is a reality
check against Italy in Daejeon on Tuesday. You would not put money on the
Koreans lasting longer now that the US!
Meanwhile Poland coach Jerzy Engel believed his players finally gave a true
reflection of their ability after 2-0 and 4-0 defeats to South Korea and
Portugal, respectively.
"My players showed that they belong at the World Cup," said Engel.
"For us, this game was very important because it was good for the mental
state of the players.
"We represented our country and I was very proud. We won and leave with good
memories."
