France coach Roger Lemerre will decide his own fate despite his and Les Bleus' humiliating exit from the World Cup.

Lemerre was called to a meeting at the French Football Federation on Friday by FFF president Claude Simonet and the press widely expected him to resign, or be fired.

However, Simonet has resisted calls for his sacking and left it in Lemerre's own hands.

"Roger Lemerre didn't resign this morning," Simonet said. "He has the right to take a holiday and will give his decision in a couple of days."

Failure to qualify for the second round has been a huge embarrassment for French football.

"It was a big accident," Simonet said.

"We will be analysing this in the coming days. There were injuries, poor refereeing decisions and tired players.

"It's not the coach or the players' fault, but some of the players will surely end their international careers."

France have come under fire for having played against South Korea when the start of the tournament was just several days away.

Midfield genius Zinedine Zidane injured his thigh in that match and did not play against Senegal in opening match, a French defeat.

He also sat out France's scoreless draw with Uruguay but did return to face Denmark.

The French press have reported that Zidane had been forced to play against the Koreans because of an agreement with the co-hosts federation.

"Zidane was not obliged to play," Simonet said. "The game was transmitted on French TV and we preferred him to play in the match."

Simonet himself is finding it difficult to come to terms with Les Bleus' early knockout.

"I feel humiliated by this early elimination," but he added, "there is no crisis in French football. I am always confident in Roger and his staff."
