Gravesen (left) plies his trade with Everton (Allsport)
ENGLAND TO FACE PREMIERSHIP DANES
By PA Sport Staff
Denmark's line-up on Saturday will not be an entirely unfamiliar one for
England. A number of the Danish players ply their trade in the Premiership and
Sven-Goran Eriksson's players will be only too aware of the threats they could
pose.
Stig Tofting
Born: 14/08/69
Position: Midfielder
Club: Bolton
Previous Clubs: Aarhus Fremad, OB, Duisburg, AGF, Hamburg.
Tofting started out as a fork-lift truck driver before joining Aarhus Fremad
in 1988. This was followed by further spells in Denmark and Germany before
Bolton snapped him up in February 2002. His nickname is 'The Lawnmower' because
of his ability to cut down anything that gets in his way. With his menacing
bulldog looks, tattoos and pierced tongue, his appearance alone is enough to
terrify the opposition. He has a reputation for powerful tackling, covering his
defenders well and powerful drives forward. With Tofting and Gravesen, Denmark
have created a midfield area that is not easy to penetrate and will bite back if
provoked.
Thomas Sorensen
Born: 12/06/76
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Sunderland
Previous Clubs: OB
Sorensen joined Sunderland for £500,000 in 1998 and since then has established
himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership. Tall, powerful and
brave he is the sort of player any defence would be confident to play in front
of. Sorensen has also proved himself at international level. He was faced with
the unenviable task of stepping into Peter Schmeichel's shoes and has filled the
role admirably. His performances for both Sunderland and Denmark are almost sure
to have attracted interest from clubs all over Europe, and he is still only 26.
Niclas Jensen
Born: 17/08/74
Position: Defender
Club: Manchester City
Previous Clubs: FC Copenhagen, PSV Eindhoven
Left-footed Jensen is the Premiership new-boy following Manchester City's
promotion last season. He has spent most of his career in Denmark but also had
an unsuccessful loan period at PSV Eindhoven during the 1996/7 season. Jensen
was brought to England in January 2002 as a relatively unknown player, but his
strong tackling and solid defending have helped raise his profile. He made his
international debut in 1998 against the Czech Republic and plays mostly at
left-back, but has the ability to surge forward on the left of midfield. Jensen
is the ideal replacement for veteran Jan Heintze when he retires at the end of
the tournament.
Thomas Gravesen
Born: 11/03/76
Position: Midfielder
Club: Everton
Previous Clubs: Vejle, Hamburg
Gravesen has earned himself a reputation as a player not to be messed with. He
began his career with Danish club Vejle before moving to Hamburg in 1997. Three
years later he made his first appearance in the Premiership and has made his
name as one of Everton's most fearless midfielders. Recent problems, however,
have overshadowed his career in England, after reports of him criticising the
club and management for not having enough ambition. He has been linked with a
move back to Germany so he can be closer to home. Gravesen is strong and very
difficult to knock off the ball. He has formed a formidable midfield partnership
with Stig Tofting at international level. The pair have often been
affectionately referred to as 'The Bruise Brothers'.
Jesper Gronkjaer
Born: 12/08/77
Position: Midfield
Club: Chelsea
Previous Clubs: AaB, Ajax
Gronkjaer has been with Chelsea since October 2000 but a number of injuries
have restricted him to just 27 league appearances for the club. Ajax sold the
player for £7.8 million after former coach Co Adriaanse moaned about his lack of
fitness. Gronkjaer plays on the right for his club, but at international level
he switches with Dennis Rommedahl from left to right during matches. He is very
quick and has the brains and feet to outwit many defenders. His crossing can
also be deadly accurate. If fully fit his partnership with Rommedahl will cause
Danny Mills and Ashley Cole problems.
Claus Jensen
Born: 29/04/77
Position: Midfield
Club: Charlton
Previous Clubs: Naestved, Lyngby, Bolton
Jensen first moved to England in 1998 when he joined Bolton from Lyngby, but
it was his move to Charlton two years later that brought him widespread acclaim.
Jensen can bring stability to the midfield and has the capacity to create and
score goals, but, like Gronkjaer, injury has hampered his season. Jensen has
international experience at both Under-21 and senior level. He made his full
international debut against Portugal in 2000 but has yet to establish himself as
a regular in the Danish team. He has not appeared in the World Cup so far, but
his knowledge of the England side could prove very useful to coach Morten
Olsen.
