Uruguay striker Alvaro Recoba was left to rue
the missed opportunities that could have kept the South Americans in the World
Cup.
The Uruguay squad began the long trip home on Thursday after suffering a first-round
exit in their first finals in 12 years.
They finished third in Group A after picking up just two points from their
three matches against Denmark, Senegal and France.
However they came within a whisker of qualifying after fighting back from 3-0
down in their final game to draw 3-3 with Senegal.
One more goal would have seen them go through to the second round.
"We leave with pride because we gave our best, but also sad because of the
chances we missed," said Inter Milan striker Recoba. "But that's how football
is."
