Midfielder Shinji Ono hopes Japan can ride on the wave of euphoria sweeping
the country and straight into the second round when they face Tunisia on Friday.
Victory would ensure their place in the last 16 and send a nation, already
experiencing a severe bout of football fever, wild with excitement.
"I'm really surprised to see how the Japanese people have reacted to us," he
said.
"We cannot help but win on Friday if they back us again. Their cheers bring us
to life and put pressure on our opponents."
After earning their first World Cup point in the opening 2-2 draw with
Belgium, Japan went on to record their first win against Russia.
Now they are on the verge of uncharted territory in the last 16.
And the Feyenoord star wants to grab a bit of the glory himself this time
around after watching childhood friend Junichi Inamoto, released by Arsenal, hit
the winner against the Russians.
"I want to score the goal that leads the team to victory," said Ono.
"Inamoto and I have played together since our high school days, and it his
outstanding performances that encourage me the most.
"I will squeeze out every last bit of effort to get the Japanese behind us
on Friday."
After their achievements so far, it is vital that Japan do not fall at the
final hurdle against the Tunisians in Osaka.
Midfielder Hiroaki Morishima though believes the players have become even more
united by their historic efforts.
"The atmosphere around the camp is very good and I am happy to be part of
this team," he said.
"The team spirit is why we have played so well and achieved what we have so
far.
"But all the players understand that this is the decisive one. However, if we
fight in the same way we did our last two games then we will be through."
