Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari insists his side are not good enough to be
called World Cup favourites despite their 5-2 win over Costa Rica in their
final group game.
With Argentina and defending champions France both out, many people believe
Brazil can clinch a fifth World Cup.
But Scolari claims they need to iron out the problems that allowed Costa Rica
to fight back from from three goals down to 3-2.
"We understand that people see us as the favourites but we do not see it that
way," he said.
"We are going to stay humble and take it step by step.
"Brazil are still experiencing some problems at the moment.
"When we get further ahead we start to play slower and not doing what I have
told them in training.
"We give away too many chances to the opposition. However we know our
problems and we also know are strengths."
Brazil will now face the runners-up of Group H in the second round, putting them
on a possible collision course with England in the quarter-final.
After three wins out of three in their group, Scolari's men will be hoping for
more of the same as they enter the knock-out phase.
"Every match is decisive when you get to this stage so we need to keep calm
and concentrate on our game," he said.
But he denied the tournament is any easier without Argentina and France.
"The teams that are still here are the ones with the most quality," he
said.
"When we face them, we will be facing the best teams."
Costa Rica coach Alexandre Guimaraes had mixed emotions after his side missed
out on second spot in the group on goal difference to Turkey.
"I am sad because we have to leave, but we have showed enough football to be
a part of this World Cup," he said.
"We have four points and it is just a difference of goals that has chosen one
team above another.
"We are very proud and extremely happy with our style. We came to show the
improvement in Costa Rican football and today we showed that against one of the
most important national teams."
Guimaraes predicted a bright future for Costa Rica, but is unsure whether he
will be part of it.
"Today was my last game as national coach because my contract ends," he
said.
"We have to wait and we have to see, now everyone just wants to watch the
rest of the World Cup.
"But the team has a great future. The experience of games like today will
help us a lot and give us a chance to play at the next World Cup."
