Turkey coach Senol Gunes has claimed his side had been hindered by having non-European referees in charge of their matches.

The Turks need to beat China by two clear goals on Thursday and hope Costa Rica are defeated by Brazil if they are to progress to the second round.

Gunes insisted both Korean Kim Young Joo, who officiated in their 2-1 loss to Brazil, and Benin's Coffi Codjia - in charge of the 1-1 draw with Costa Rica - had made mistakes.

Colombian Oscar Ruiz is the man in the middle in the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Wednesday, and Gunes said: "We have had no European officials and though I do not want to say that this has had a negative effect, we were not used to this.

"It has been a new experience for my players who have had difficulty communicating with officials during the games.

"With European referees the players have had prior experience. In both our games the referees made mistakes.

"Against Brazil everyone saw what happened with the penalty which was outside the box - everyone except the referee.

"It has been a big, big experience for us but we have deserved more than we have got so far."

Leicester's Muzzy Izzet and midfielder Okan are injured - though Izzet has yet to kick a ball in the tournament - but Turkey will have Alpay and Hakan Unsal back from suspension.

China are already out of the tournament, the first time their Yugoslav coach Boris Milutinovic has failed to reach the second round after achieving that feat with four previous teams.

Milutinovic, 57, confirmed he would stand down as coach after the match but would be looking for a new job with another country.

He said: "It is my last game with China, but I hope I can continue as a coach."

Milutinovic believes the fact that Turkey are under pressure could play into China's hands.

He added: "Turkey need to attack and that could give China an advantage. They have some very good players but have not performed well, so they have a lot of pressure on them."

China are expected to have around 10,000 fans - most of whom would be satisfied with a draw or at least a goal to cheer.
