Taribo West feels the sacking of Shaibu Amodu in February is the main reason Nigeria have suffered a disappointing World Cup.

The Super Eagles have no chance of progressing into the last 16 for what would have been the third successive time after defeats to Argentina and Sweden.

They are hoping to restore some pride by ending England's dream of reaching the second round with victory against Sven-Goran Eriksson's side in Osaka on Wednesday.

But there is no hiding the fact they have underachieved in terms of their performances in Japan and Korea.

And West feels Amodu's departure - for not reaching the final of the African Nations cup - is the main reason why.

He believes the Nigerian FA acted hastily by changing coach so near the finals, despite employing the respected and experienced Adegboye Onigbinde in his place.

West told Channel Four news: "It has been disappointing but we lost our coach.

"You can't replace your coach just before a tournament and expect to win it.

"The new manager can't know his best team after just eight or nine weeks, and that is why we have suffered."
