Nigeria are going to follow the lead of England and hire a foreign coach to revitalise their fortunes.

The Super Eagles have gone out of the World Cup after losing their first two games against Argentina and Sweden.

They face England in their final match on Wednesday, and sports minister Stephen Akiga believes they can learn a lot from England's appointment of Sven-Goran Eriksson.

"You cannot rule out the importance of hiring a foreign coach," Akiga told the Lagos-based Newspaper This Day.

"Even the inventors of the game, England, have a foreigner as their coach.

"So going for one who will have what it takes to reorganise and restructure the team for the future will not be a bad idea."

Current coach Festus Onigbinde stepped into the breach after Shaibu Amodu was sacked following a disappointing African Nations Cup campaign at the beginning of the year.

Onigbinde, whose contract runs out after the World Cup, has previously spoken out against the hiring of a foreign coach.

However in the build-up to the tournament, names like Bayer Leverkusen's Klaus Toppmoller - the off-field inspiration behind his side's unlikely run to the Champions League final - were linked with the job.
