COSTA RICA v TURKEY MINUTE-BY-MINUTE

By James Dart, Sportinglife.com

Final score: Costa Rica 1 Turkey 1

Man-of-the-match: Mauricio Wright was a rock at the heart of Costa Rica's defence, but Wilmer Lopez was the star for me with a polished all-round performance in their midfield. Intelligent and skilful, the late leveller was fair on him as he did not deserve to be on the losing side today.

90 mins: Game over and Costa Rica have salvaged a draw. Turkey will be annoyed to have conceded a late goal for a second straight game, but a draw was all they deserved today. Costa Rica are now on the brink of a place in the last 16, whilst Turkey must beat China well and hope Brazil do them a favour in the other game.

90 mins: Three minutes of added-time are to be played.

90 mins: A stunning chance for Parks to score again and dump Turkey out as he finds space in the area, takes the ball around Rustu, but slices high and wide from a tight angle with a defender on the line.

89 mins: Costa Rica are almost denied when Emre Berezoglu plays in Arif, only for him to scuff a volley into the arms of Lonnis.

88 mins: All hell breaks loose on the bench as Emre Berezoglu goes to retrieve the ball for a throw-in and pushes one of Costa Rica's coaches to get the ball back. A melee ensues and when calm eventually settles down, Emre is brandished with a yellow card. He is lucky to stay on and it will be interesting to see if there is any further action from organisers.

87 mins: Turkey respond with Arif Erdem being brought on in place of Tugay.

86 mins: GOAL PARKS - Such a dramatic equaliser for Costa Rica and one that they thoroughly deserve. After a long free-kick is drifted into the Turkish box, Wanchope heads down to Medford, who hacks the ball over his head to the back post where Parks lashes the ball into the top corner with Rustu out of position.

85 mins: When the corner comes in from Wanchope, Rustu wins a free-kick for some over-physicality from Wright.

84 mins: Costa Rica push on and substitute Parks sees a shot deflected behind for another corner.

82 mins: Wanchope pressures Umit Ozat into conceding a corner. Costa Rica go short from the flag-kick, but when the ball is eventually played in, Rustu comes out to catch and ease the pressure.

81 mins: Parks shimmies one way and then the other, but fails to pick out a team-mate with a pass, electing to shoot and then seeing his effort blocked.

80 mins: As the game enters its final stages, Costa Rica need to push on and try to grab an equaliser. They have just run out of a little gas in the last five minutes or so.

79 mins: Turkey's turn to make another change with midfielder Basturk going off and Kahveci Nihat replacing him.

77 mins: Costa Rica make their last two personnel changes, as Winston Parks and Steven Bryce come on. Wallace and Lopez return to the bench.

76 mins: Goalscorer Emre looks to add to his total as he picks up the ball just outside the Costa Rican area, only to see his measured effort blocked.

75 mins: Turkey coach Gunes makes an interesting change as Sukur comes off and Mansiz Ilhan takes his place in attack.

74 mins: Costa Rica can take heart from the fact that Croatia trailed 1-0 to Italy at this stage in their match yesterday, yet still went on to win 2-1.

73 mins: Since scoring through Emre Berezoglu, Turkey have failed to push on and reinforce their lead. They are now looking to take some of the pace out of the game.

71 mins: A penalty area scramble in the Turkish box where Medford and Wanchope are both unable to punish the defence for some nervous play.

70 mins: Defeat for Costa Rica would notseal their fate, but with a final game with Brazil to come, they really could do with a point from this game.

69 mins: A player is down so Wallace plays the ball out to enable the Turkish physio to come on and treat Tugay.

68 mins: Defender Marin makes a rare foray forward, but after a neat three-man move, he is caught in an offside position.

67 mins: The first Costa Rican substitution sees Hernan Medford bolster their forward options with Centeno coming off.

66 mins: Wanchope plays Castro into the left side of the Turkish area, and the latter's cross-shot is just blocked by Rustu at his near post.

65 mins: Lonnis commands his area well to collect a cross from Basturk, but Costa Rica need more at the other end of the field.

64 mins: Delivery comes from Sas, but Sukur is just unable to get his head onto the cross as it rolls out for a goal-kick.

63 mins: Wright catches the leg of Basturk just outside the Costa Rica area on the left hand side.

62 mins: Great work from Castro leaves two Turkish defenders wrong-footed with an outrageous dummy. Lopez lays the ball off to Solis on the edge of the Turkish area, but he skies his shot horribly to let Turkey off the hook.

60 mins: As we reach the hour mark, Gomez fires in a shot, but is adjudged to have received the ball in an offside location.

59 mins: Whilst the game may have opened up since the interval, Emre Berezoglu's goal should now make the contest an even more entertaining one.

58 mins: Lopez tries his luck with a bouncing effort from 30 yards, but Rustu gets his body behind it comfortably to save.

57 mins: Turkey have looked bright since the interval, but Costa Rica will feel they are getting involved a lot more as well.

56 mins: GOAL EMRE BEREZOGLU - After Sas plays the ball into the path of the midfielder, his shot is blocked. However, the Inter man is fortunate to recover the rebound and turn to roll the ball low past Lonnis at his near post.

55 mins: Sas looks to whip a cross into the Costa Rican area, but his attempt is poor and goes out for a goal-kick.

54 mins: Manchester City man Wanchope now finds himself in a foot race with Rustu to win the ball inside the Turkish penalty area, but an offside flag makes his attempt to go around the goalkeeper meaningless.

53 mins: Wanchope tries to take the ball past four Turkish defenders, but comes unstuck against the third of these, Fatih Akyel.

52 mins: The match is really opening up. Firstly, Castro finds space on the left and crosses in to Lopez. He cleverly lays the ball off to Gomez, who drops a shoulder before shooting wide of Rustu's right-hand upright from just inside the Turkish box.

51 mins: Gunes' half-time words have inspired Turkey and Basturk's cross in towards Sas is turned behind by Luis Marin. Basturk takes the corner, but Lonnis comes out to claim dominantly.

50 mins: Turkey have clearly made the better start to this period as Ergun Penbe's 30-yard shot skies over Lonnis' crossbar.

49 mins: Sukur fluffs Turkey's best chance of the game so far. He manages to beat the Costa Rica offside trap, but shoots poorly over the bar from the left side of the Costa Rica penalty area.

48 mins: The ball is whipped into the six-yard box by Sas and Sukur's flicked header under pressure at the near post just does not have enough on it, flying behind for a goal-kick.

47 mins: Sas bursts to the by-line and fails to beat first defender Wright, who slices behind for a corner.

46 mins: We're under way once again in Incheon with the hope of a much better second half than first.

HT: Costa Rica 0 Turkey 0

45 mins: Two minutes of stoppage-time are played before the end of what has been one of the more disappointing periods at this World Cup. The match can only get better and hopefully both teams will look to play a more expansive game after the interval.

44 mins: Solis bursts down the Costa Rican right and Blackburn midfielder Tugay slides in and catches his trailing leg. Referee Codjia is back in his book to dish out a yellow card to Tugay.

43 mins: A tough elbow in the face for Emre Asik as Centeno leaps with him for a header. It was an accidental clash, but Emre is less than impressed.

42 mins: Umit Davala stays down after a poor challenge from Carlos Castro. After waving advantage, he returns to Castro when the ball goes out for a throw-in to book the Costa Rica player.

41 mins: Tugay almost threads a majestic 40-yard pass through to Sukur, but the bandaged Martinez tracks back superbly to not only win the ball, but come away with it as well.

40 mins: The crowd attempts to inject some atmosphere into the game with their version of the Mexican Wave.

38 mins: Gomez almost gets behind Umit Davala down the left, but the Turkish man does well to regain his ground and volley away.

37 mins: Both Sukur and Sas are not having it all their own way up front, as many experts had predicted. Costa Rica's three-man central defensive team has kept them shackled for almost the entire game.

36 mins: More problems for Rustu as he stays down with a knock. Lengthy treatment on the field follows and he is given the all-clear to play on.

35 mins: Rustu is almost embarassed as he comes out to collect a long ball on the edge of his penalty area. However, under pressure from Harold Wallace, he takes the ball just outside the box and scrambles it clear with his right boot.

34 mins: It has been a very even match so far, but Costa Rica will feel they should be ahead after Centeno's chance.

33 mins: The best chance of the game so far falls to Walter Centeno after Costa Rica break with pace after robbing Sas of the ball in midfield. Lopez plays Centeno in just inside the Turkish penalty area, but he fails to bring a save out of Rustu by firing over the bar from just 15 yards out.

32 mins: The corner is deep and flies beyond the heads of both waiting sides in the middle.

31 mins: Turkey win a corner after good play from Umit Osik down the left.

30 mins: A third of the way into the game and neither side has yet to really test the opponent's goalkeeper. Obviously, a lot is riding on the game, so the importance of not losing is imperative for the sides.

29 mins: Gomez gets on the wrong side of Fatih Akyel, who is lucky to escape a yellow card for pulling the forward down.

28 mins: Good play from Costa Rica as they press Turkey deep into their half, before Wanchope concedes a needless free-kick.

27 mins: Emre Berezoglu feeds Sukur just outside the Costa Rica box, but four defenders immediately close him down and combine to dispossess him.

25 mins: Basturk provides Sas with half-a-yard on the left side of the Costa Rica penalty box, but his attempted shot is blocked by the sliding boot of Wright.

24 mins: Costa Rica are clearly not giving Turkey an easy time of it with plenty of hefty challenges flying in.

23 mins: Another booking, this time is given to Martinez, as he slides in from behind and takes the legs away from Sas.

22 mins: Fatih Akyel curls in a good cross for Turkey, but none of his strikers gamble on the centre and the ball runs tamely out for a goal-kick.

21 mins: Martinez returns to the field with his head bandaged. Meanwhile, the first booking of the game is given to Emre Asik for a foul on Solis.

20 mins: Emre Berezoglu and then Sas combine before Umit Davala's volley is blocked.

19 mins: Martinez catches a boot in the face and has to require treatment from his team's physio. He is temporarily stretchered off.

18 mins: Both Emre Berezoglu and Umit Davala are left on the ground after crunching tackles, but nothing is given.

17 mins: Sas speeds down the left and wins a corner off Gilberto Martinez. A short corner ends with Sas crossing, but Wright wins the battle to be first to the ball.

16 mins: Better play from Turkey in the last couple of minutes with Emre Berezoglu pulling most of the strings in midfield.

15 mins: Tugay Kerimoglu lays the ball off to Sas, whose ambitious shot from fully 30 yards fails to really test Lonnis as he gathers comfortably.

14 mins: Ergun plays in a dangerous ball from the left, but Lonnis does well to come out and collect with a diving catch ahead of Sukur.

13 mins: There is a good atmosphere inside the ground today, which is being used in these finals for the first time.

12 mins: The ball is tapped to Umit Ozat and his driven shot slices just wide of Erick Lonnis' left-hand post, although he looked to have it covered.

11 mins: Sas is caught late from behind by Mauricio Wright, who concedes a free-kick in a central location around 30 yards out.

10 mins: Guimaraes must be happy with the way his Costa Rican side has begun as they clearly do not look over-awed by their opponents.

9 mins: Wanchope almost fires Costa Rica into a stunning lead as he volleys on the turn from the right edge of the Turkish penalty area, only to see it fly just over Rustu's crossbar.

8 mins: Hasan Sas, so impressive against Brazil, gets on the end of a Hakan Sukur knock-down, but sees his subsequent cross blocked and then cleared by Gilberto Martinez.

7 mins: Turkey are struggling to find space in the early stages, with Costa Rica closing them down quickly. Senol Gunes will hope to get midfielder Yirldiray Basturk into the game much more.

6 mins: Ronald Gomez almost finds himself in space inside the Turkish box, but he just can't trap the ball and Rustu Recber collects.

5 mins: It's been a quiet opening period of sparring between the teams.

4 mins: Manchester City striker Paulo Wanchope is felled from behind by Emre Berezoglu and a free-kick is given.

3 mins: Harold Wallace attempts to break free down the right, but Ergun is keeping close tabs on him.

2 mins: Turkey pass the ball around early as most of their team get a touch.

1 min: Benin referee Coffi Codjia gets the game under way as Costa Rica kick off.

Pre-match: Sunday's action moves on to Group C now with Turkey taking on Costa Rica in Incheon. Victory for Alexander Guimaraes' Costa Rica would book their place in the second round alongside Brazil, whilst Turkey need a win badly after their opening loss to Brazil. Costa Rica named an unchanged line-up to the team that beat China 2-0, but Turkey brought in Emre Asik and Ergun Penbe to replace the suspended Alpay and Hakan Unsal.
