MEXICO v ECUADOR MINUTE-BY-MINUTE

By James Dart, Sportinglife.com

Final score: Mexico 2 Ecuador 1

Man-of-the-match: Gerardo Torrado provided the decisive goal along with some excellent link-up play in midfield. And after Mexico fell behind so early, he was instrumental in leading his side back into the game.

90 mins: Full-time and Mexico preserve a 100% record in the competition so far. They dominated this game for most of the opening 75 minutes, but were left hanging on after that to secure a deserved 2-1 win. They are still not guaranteed a second-round place and will have to get a result against Italy to do so. For Ecuador, they must thrash Croatia and hope Mexico beat Italy.

90 mins: Blanco curls in a sweet effort from the edge of the Ecuador area, but Cevallos dives across to turn it behind.

90 mins: The referee decides that there will be three more minutes to be played.

89 mins: Ecuador will not be out with a defeat, but they would be left with a massive mountain to climb to secure a miraculous progression.

88 mins: Mexico make another substitution as Gabriel Caballero takes the place of Rodriguez. Meanwhile, Delgado has picked up a yellow card, apparently for something he has said.

87 mins: Agony for Mendez and Ecuador as good work from Aguinaga lays the ball off to Mendez on the edge of the Mexican penalty area. His measured low shot leaves Perez rooted to the spot, but it curls just inches wide of the 'keeper's left-hand post.

86 mins: Perez is almost caught out by a deep cross from De la Cruz which he just manages to gather in from above the head of Delgado.

85 mins: Better pressure from Ecuador in their search for a leveller. However, their adventurous nature has been lacking for long spells of this game.

84 mins: Delivery from Mendez is disappointing and Mexico clear. Around 30 seconds later, Mendez finds himself in space about 28 yards out and he fires in a volley that flies into the arms of a relieved Perez.

83 mins: Carlos Tenorio's long ball catches a deflection and flies behind for an Ecuador corner.

82 mins: Mexico clear Chala's flag-kick and Aguirre is left to be thankful for his goalkeeper for the save that could secure them a priceless victory.

81 mins: From out of nowhere, Carlos Tenorio bursts into the Mexican penalty area and forces Perez into a marvellous save with his foot, turning the ball behind for a corner.

80 mins: Just ten minutes remain as Hernandez almost feeds Rodriguez in acres of space inside the Ecuador area, only to see his attempted pass come to grief.

79 mins: A rare lull in play during what has been a frenetic second half.

77 mins: Hernandez does indeed come on as he makes his 87th cap by replacing Borgetti, who will be happy with his day's work.

76 mins: Mexican crowd favourite Luis Hernandez looks poised to enter the fray.

75 mins: Delgado is almost picked out by Carlos Tenorio's cross from the left, but the ball is just too hard for him to reach as it runs away from him.

74 mins: A penalty area scramble for Ecuador after Morales skips around poor old De la Cruz. His cross is picked up by Luna, but after a quick game of pinball inside the box, Ecuador clear their lines.

73 mins: Morales leaves De la Cruz in his wake down the left, but just tries to take on too many defenders himself and eventually is crowded out.

72 mins: Mexico are playing some good football at the moment with Ecuador really on the ropes, but importantly, Gomez's side are not yet out of the game at 2-1 down.

71 mins: Three chances in three minutes for Borgetti and he is getting closer. His accurate run across the penalty area sees him shoot low past Cevallos only to curl his effort slightly, resulting in it striking the outside of the post and going out for a goal-kick.

70 mins: Good moments for Mexico as Borgetti tries his luck again, succeeding only in shooting wide of Cevallos' left-hand upright from 22 yards out.

69 mins: Borgetti's turn to spurn a great opportunity as Blanco's floated cross is headed back across the penalty area by Luna, but the striker fails to make contact with his attempted volley.

68 mins: Morales twists and turns his way to the by-line, pulling the ball back to Rodriguez. However, he slices his shot poorly and Ecuador escape.

67 mins: As we enter the final quarter of the match, Ecuador are finally showing some signs of life, but Mexico continue to look a real threat when they go forward.

66 mins: Guerron himself drives in the free-kick, but it is well-held by Perez in the Mexico goal.

65 mins: Mendez's corner is cleared and seconds later Torrado fouls Guerron to earn himself a booking.

64 mins: A brilliant run by Carlos Tenorio leaves the Mexican defence in his wake. His searing pace sends him almost clear down the left, but Marquez slides in to concede a corner.

63 mins: Delgado goes down just outside the Mexico area, but the referee waves away his claims for a free-kick.

62 mins: Obviously it would be foolish to write Ecuador off, but it does look hard to see where they are going to grab an equaliser from.

61 mins: Luna lays the ball off for Blanco just inside the Ecuador penalty area, but the playmaker's shot is blocked.

60 mins: A nasty foul on Rodriguez earns Carlos Tenorio a booking. That makes four for the Ecuador side now.

59 mins: Ecuador coach Gomez makes his final substitution with Aguinaga coming on for Obregon, making it three men forward now them.

58 mins: Torrado's goal is the least that Mexico have deserved, but they are almost pegged back immediately by Obregon's ranging shot from 25 yards that just flies over Perez's bar.

57 mins: GOAL TORRADO - An excellent goal from the midfielder as Mexico hit the front for the first time in the game. After exchanging passes with Rodriguez, Torrado strikes a left-footed effort across the goalkeeper from 23 yards out and it flies into the corner of the net.

55 mins: Substitute Carlos Tenorio almost breaks clear down the right with pace, but a good tackle from Vidrio stops him from getting away.

54 mins: A second change in personnel for Ecuador with Kaviedes leaving the pitch and Carlos Tenorio taking his place.

53 mins: Incisive work from Blanco sees him play the ball out to Morales on the left. His cross is well-collected by Cevallos.

52 mins: Space for Arellano out on the right flank, but his pass inside is poor and Ecuador hack upfield.

51 mins: This second period has begun in a similar style to the first with Mexico the aggressors and Ecuador dropping deep.

50 mins: Torrado wins possession inside the Ecuador half and plays in Blanco. However, he does not see Hurtado behind him, who tackles him successfully to leave Blanco in a heap on the floor.

49 mins: From the free-kick just outside the right edge of the Ecuador penalty area, Luna's centre is curled over the angle of post and bar disappointingly.

48 mins: A crude foul on Arellano on Guerron after he allows the wing-back to break towards the Ecuador area, before tugging him down. He is rightly booked.

47 mins: There does not appear to have been any tactical switches from both teams during the break from the way in which they have lined up for the second period.

46 mins: The action restarts with no changes made by either coach during the interval.

HT: Mexico 1 Ecuador 1

45 mins: One minute of added-time is played before the half-time whistle sounds. Despite falling behind, Mexico have been the dominant side and deserve to go in at the break on level terms. Indeed, they could well have gone in ahead and unless Ecuador can raise their game in the second period, it will be hard for them to get anything out of the match.

44 mins: Arellano goes on a long crossfield run, but his touch lets him down and Poroso wins the ball.

43 mins: Luna almost bursts clear of the Ecuador defence after a sweet passing interchange with three team-mates, but Guerron sticks out a timely boot to break up the play.

42 mins: It really is all Mexico at the moment and Ecuador are hanging on for half-time.

41 mins: Rodriguez finds himself beyond the last man and bearing down on the Ecuador penalty area. He lacks pace, though, and the defence tracks back to tackle him. He wins a lucky ricochet of the ball and plays it back to Blanco, whose shot is dug out from beneath his feet, but saved low to his right by Cevallos.

40 mins: Luna and Blanco both just fail to pick out striker Borgetti within a matter of seconds of each other, as Ecuador begin to lack organisation at the back.

39 mins: With all the possession that Mexico are enjoying - they have so far had around 70% of it - Ecuador are sure to tire in the hot conditions as they chase the play.

38 mins: Mexico are pushing on in a bid to take the lead before the interval and Ecuador just can't get their foot on the ball.

37 mins: Blanco takes charge at the set-piece, but his pacy cross flies straight into the chest of Cevallos.

36 mins: One of the moves of the game almost enables Morales to be played into some space by Luna, but his pass is poor and wrong-foots his team-mate. However, Morales does manage to win a free-kick wide on the left.

35 mins: A hefty foul on Rodriguez by newcomer Ayovi hands a free-kick to Mexico, who are starting to play some better football.

34 mins: An early substitution for Ecuador as Edwin Tenorio is replaced by Marlon Ayovi.

33 mins: Borgetti looks to add a second to his tally for the day, but Rodriguez's pass just goes awry with the striker attempting to latch onto it inside the Ecuador penalty area.

32 mins: An early ball in from the right flank sees Ecuador press Mexico back deep into their own half. When the ball comes out to Obregon, around 30 yards out, he just cuts across his effort and slices it out for a goal-kick.

30 mins: Mexico are now the team in the ascendancy as Blanco floats in a cross from the by-line in towards Luna, but his weak header fails to hit the target.

29 mins: Just as it looked as though Mexico were bereft of attacking incision, Morales finally produced some quality around the Ecuador penalty area. Borgetti's finish was cool and clinical from eight yards out and we now have a game.

28 mins: GOAL BORGETTI - A basic left-footed cross from Ramon Morales out on the left sees Borgetti nip in ahead of his marker to volley home across the diving body of Cevallos and into the net.

27 mins: Promising play from Torrado and then Blanco almost creates an opening for Borgetti, but like much of Mexico's play so far, it falls flat in the final third.

26 mins: A second booking for an Ecuador player with goalkeeper Cevallos seeing yellow for time-wasting at a goal-kick.

25 mins: Rare space for Blanco on the right touchline, but he overhits his cross disappointingly as it flies out for a throw-in on the other side of the field.

24 mins: Torrado's pass from the left flank picks Luna out on the edge of the Ecuador area, but his flicked volley fails to test Cevallos in the Ecuador goal.

23 mins: As the game passes the halfway stage in the first half, Ecuador continue to look secure at the back with Mexico really struggling to create anything much.

21 mins: Blanco attempts to thread a pass through for Borguetti, but he just has his sights off and the ball runs through to Cevallos.

20 mins: A good run by Kleber Chala down the left flank sees some equally impressive defending from Arellano, who eventually shepherds the ball out for a goal-kick.

19 mins: Mendez and Blanco now have a coming together inside the Ecuador penalty area, and the referee will have to stamp out any sign of this game becoming overly tetchy.

18 mins: Blanco leaves the free-kick to Braulio Luna, but even though his cross is whipped in well, Jose' Cevallos in the Ecuador goal gathers safely.

17 mins: After Rodriguez wins a free-kick deep in the Ecuador half, Guerron goes down clutching his head after the Mexico man clashes with him. No further action is taken by the referee.

16 mins: Mexico coach Aguirre will not be very happy with his team's play for the time being as they are resorting to too many long balls.

15 mins: We didn't get to see too much of the Ecuador side in their opening defeat against Italy, but they have shown some good touches so far today and are providing Mexico with a stern test.

14 mins: A foolish yellow card for Kaviedes after he fouls Salvador Carmona deep inside the Mexican half.

13 mins: Kaviedes shrugs of the attention of two defenders to fire in a tame shot on the Mexico goal. Perez gathers easily.

12 mins: A foul on Gerardo Torrado by Alfonso Obregon hands Mexico a free-kick and earns the midfielder a talking-to from the referee.

11 mins: Mexico are the team bossing possession at the moment, but they are failing to produce anything in the final third.

9 mins: Blanco floats a ball into the box as he looks for Borgetti, but Ecuador clear back to the talismanic Mexican midfielder. He runs into the penalty and goes down under Augusto Poroso's tackle, but it could never be a penalty.

8 mins: It's been a very lively opening to the game and as things stand, Group G has all four teams level on three points.

7 mins: Delgado's goal has been a major shock for Mexico coach Javier Aguirre - and for Ecuador themselves, as it is their first ever World Cup finals goal.

6 mins: Mexico almost hit back immediately as Arellano combines with Jared Borgetti after a long run, but as he receives the ball for a second time, his shot lacks direction and power.

5 mins: GOAL DELGADO - The Southampton striker rises to power home a superb header from ten yards out. Ulises De la Cruz whips in an excellent ball from the right and although Oscar Perez gets a hand to Delgado's header, he fails to stop it flying in off the underside of the crossbar.

4 mins: Manuel Vidrio loses possession inside his own half, but Kaviedes is unable to benefit as he in turn fails to control the ball.

3 mins: A free-kick to Mexico as Rodriguez is fouled by Raul Guerron out on the right flank. Blanco curls the ball in, but Agustin Delgado rises to head away.

2 mins: Cuauhtemoc Blanco looks to get some early possession for Mexico as both sides try and settle down on a warm afternoon.

1 min: Tunisian referee Daami heralds the start of today's action as Mexico kick off here in Miyagi.

Pre-match: Both teams came into the game knowing that a victory for Ecuador would leave Group G on a knife-edge with all four teams on three points with a game to play. Mexico brought in Johan Rodriguez and Jesus Arellano, whilst Ecuador coach Hernan Dario Gomez was forced to leave striker Alex Aguinaga on the bench with Ivan Kaviedes starting.
