Portugal playmaker Rui Costa has warned his team-mates they must keep their
nerve against Poland if they are to stay in the World Cup.
The Portuguese left themselves with a mountain to climb after going three
goals down to the United States in their first match.
And although they fought back to 3-2, they could not rescue a point.
Portugal must now avoid defeat against the Poles, who lost their opener to
co-hosts South Korea, in Jeonju on Monday to maintain their interest in the
competition.
"We know we will have to stay calm if we are to turn around a bad
situation," said Rui Costa.
"The fact that the losers will be going home is tough. However, that is the
way it is.
"Qualification is at stake when two good teams line up, and we know on our
part that we can do it."
Meanwhile Poland coach Jerzy Engel admits his side have had to lower
expectations since their surprise opening defeat to South Korea.
"After qualifying, the players were thinking about first place in the group,
but now we must be realistic," he said.
"It is now a battle to take second place, but I am still confident we can get
into the next round."
