Zinedine Zidane's return from injury for the showdown with Denmark would be a huge psychological boost for France, claims Emmanuel Petit.
France have targeted the must-win game in Incheon on Tuesday for Zidane's comeback and Petit says everyone in the squad hopes the Real Madrid star will have recovered from his torn thigh muscle by then.
Petit admits it is vital for Les Bleus that Zidane returns for the Denmark game, which the World Cup holders must win by two goals to progress to the second round and avoid an embarrassing exit.
"If he could play, yes, that would be a big boost," said the Chelsea midfielder.
"He can bring a lot of positive things to the team and to the players and I think it would be very good for the minds of the players if he could return.
"Everyone knows he's an excellent player and he's the link between the midfield and the strikers."
France are especially keen to have Zidane available because Petit and Arsenal striker Thierry Henry are suspended for the final Group A match.
Petit is sidelined after picking up his second caution against Uruguay, while Henry is banned following his red-card challenge on Marcelo Romero.
Petit is gutted at missing such an important game, but has faith in his team-mates to get the result they need.
He feels France have created enough chances to score - theyhit the woodwork three times against Senegal and Uruguay - and reckons they have just been unlucky.
"Personally I'm disappointed that I will not be able to play in the last game," he said.
"We have a big squad and I think everyone will be concentrating on just the one thing - winning.
"We have to win the game by two goals. We are positive about that and I think if you look back at the last two games we could have scored maybe six or seven goals.
"It's very difficult to understand why we haven't scored in those games. It's frustrating because we certainly created a lot of chances, but didn't score.
"I don't think we've had that little bit of luck that you need in games."
In many respects France's campaign mirrors England's at Mexico 86 - a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the first match, a goalless draw in the second and a player sent off.
Then England had a certain G Lineker to rescue them in their third match against Poland, but France's firepower has been curtailed by Henry's suspension.
Henry's strike partner David Trezeguet claims it is down to the whole team to come up with the goals to beat Denmark.
"It will be hard for us and we're much closer to elimination than qualification, but we still have a chance," he said.
"It's not a question of the strikers being at fault and we all have to find the solution to our goals problem."
