BECKHAM v VERON - THE MAESTROS
David Beckham comes face to face with his Manchester United team-mate Juan
Sebastian Veron on Friday in a personal battle which could determine England's
World Cup fate.
Here Ken Gaunt looks at the qualities that make both players tick.
PASSING:
Beckham can hit the ball long or short with devastating effect and continues
to work on this side of his game. 8.
Veron prefers to play it simple and safe and rarely gives the ball away,
especially at this level. 7.
VISION:
The England captain has a keen eye for an opening and is always looking to
find a colleague. 7.
Veron ran the midfield in the victory against Nigeria and his link up play was
widely applauded. 8.
TACKLING:
Beckham has never been afraid to track back and close an opponent down. 6.
The Argentina star has proved he is not afraid to put his foot in where it
hurts. 7.
FINISHING:
Beckham has improved his goals ratio for England since Sven-Goran Eriksson
took over as manager. 7.
Veron has seemed reluctant to get into forward positions and his scoring
opportunities have been limited in the process. 6.
DEAD BALL:
The Old Trafford star is dangerous anywhere in 30 yards radius as his winner
against Greece proved. 9.
Veron has the ability to test any goalkeeper although his range is not as wide
as Beckham's. 8.
