Man of the match: Bruce Arena. It may seem strange to give the award to a coach, but the American coach pulled off a masterstroke by naming a more attacking line-up than usual. All of the American players impressed, while Conceicao deserves a mention for Portugal.

90 min: It's all over. America have clung on in the end, but their first-half performance was enough for them to secure the points. Portugal looked disjointed early on and left themselves too much to do.

45 min: The end of an absorbing first half. Both defences have looked shaky and Portugal have dominated since scoring, but credit to the Americans for taking advantage of some dire defending.

40 min: GOAL - BETO. Figo's corner is floated in to Beto at the back post. He heads it down but O'Brien blocks. The ball rebounds to Beto, though, and he drills past Friedel.

39 min: Figo's corner is headed clear by McBride. It's returned to the Real Madrid man, though, and he forces another corner.

38 min: Figo's corner from the right is headed out for another flag-kick.

36 min: GOAL - McBRIDE. Sanneh breaks down the right and sends a lovely cross over to the back post. McBride steals between Jorge Costa and Beto and heads home to put USA 3-0 up.

34 min: Roberto Beto breaks down the right flank and appeals for a free-kick after going over Hejduk's foot. The referee feels he has dived, though, and books him.

33 min: Baia has to fling himself forward to block O'Brien's cross after a terrible piece of defending from Jorge Costa.

32 min: Pinto tries to latch on to a cross from the left but his back-post run is just too late.

31 min: Pope leaves the field for treatment, but he's on his feet so won't be off for long.

29 min: GOAL - JORGE COSTA OG. Two Portugal defenders jump for a long ball from the America left before Donovan picks up the ball on the right flank. He looks to cross but it takes a wicked deflection off Jorge Costa and beats Baia.

29 min: Coceicao is pulled up for bundling over McBride down the America left.

27 min: America break two-on-two in to the Portgual half, but it's no problem for Couto to clear the danger.

26 min: Stewart takes the flag-kick himself but it drifts straight out of play for a goal-kick.

25 min: Stewart forces a corner down the right.

23 min: Rui Jorge fails to find Figo, who has pulled away from his marker into a fine position down the left.

23 min: Figo draws a foul from Pablo Mastroeni about 35 yards from the American goal.

22 min: Rui Costa's free-kick from the right is headed on by Pauleta, but again he's off target having earnt himself a yard of space.

21 min: Tony Sanneh does well to take the ball of Figo then sweep it away.

8 min: Figo's free-kick from the right is half-cleared, but then Pope is pulled up for high feet. The free-kick is 25 yards out centrally.
