Swedish goalkeeper Magnus Hedman is hoping that a successful World Cup
campaign will help him in his quest to return to the Premiership.
The unsettled Coventry City player has spelt out in no uncertain terms that he
does not want to put up with a second season of First Division football.
Hedman was close to a move to Everton in the early part of last season after
the cash-strapped Sky Blues 34-year unbroken spell in the top flight came to an
end.
The deal fell through on financial grounds with Hedman, signed from AIK
Stockholm in 1997, then pledging to help City to try and regain their
Premiership status.
But an end-of-season decline in fortunes dashed those hopes and now Hedman is
again casting an eye away from Highfield Road.
Hedman, who helped Sweden to achieve a 1-1 draw with England on Sunday, said: "If I have a good World Cup, then my future might be brighter than
what it is in my present situation.
"I don't want to play in the World Cup, which is the biggest competition of
them all, and then go back to the First Division.
"It doesn't really make sense, so I am targeting a good World Cup and then we
will see what happens."
The 29-year-old added: "If Coventry had gone straight back up then I would
have been happy to stay, but it's the financial side of things as well.
"It's a thing we have to discuss with Coventry. If they want to keep me,
we'll talk about it when I get back.
"But the other thing is that I have been at the club five years and you have
to move on in life as well."
