TURKEY FUME OVER INJUSTICE

Turkey coach Senol Gunes launched a stinging attack on referee Young Joo Kim following his side's controversial 2-1 defeat to Brazil in Munsu Stadium.

Gunes was angry with the Korean official's decision to award Brazil a penalty three minutes from time, from which Rivaldo scored the winner, and he felt Aston Villa's Alpay fouled Luziao outside the area.

He was also annoyed Kim did not make Brazil retreat the full 10 yards for a Turkey free-kick in the final minute.

Asked what he thought of the referee he said: "There was no referee. He created the penalty.

"If the referee gives the opposition a penalty for a foul outside the area then there's nothing to say.

"This is the same referee, who in the last minute when we were due to take a free-kick he the opposition stand closer to the ball than our players."

Alpay was sent off for his cynical foul, while Blackburn's Hakan Unsal was also dismissed in stoppage time for kicking the ball at Rivaldo.

The Barcelona star made a real meal of the incident and he pretended he had been hit in the face when the ball had made contact with his stomach.

Unsurprisingly, Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari disagreed with Gunes' assessment of the referee and claimed the Korean, who is the first from this country to referee a World Cup game, had a good match.

"For me I thought the referee was good," he said. "Of course I thought the penalty should have been a penalty.

"But I don't think the referee influenced the outcome of the game. He didn't make a mistake and the referee was not a problem during the game."

Scolari was delighted to get off to a winning start in Group C after all the trauma of the last few years for Brazil.

Ronaldo cancelled out Hasan Sas' 45th-minute opener for Turkey before Rivaldo converted the controversial penalty.

"It was a hard match," said the coach. "We made the mistake of allowing them to score right before half-time and that is a bad time to concede a goal.

"They only had three chances and they scored from one. We had to overcome that, but don't forget Turkey did a good job in the qualifying campaign and they surely deserve respect.

"But the team reacted positively to that goal in the dressing room at half-time and that was very pleasing.

"So I'm happy with the result and I know it will make all the people back home in Brazil happy.

"The one negative point was our finishing and I would like to see us turn more of our chances into goals."

He added: "We now face China in our next game and I can tell you they have some quite good players and a lot of potential in their side."

Gunes, who claimed his side's target is now to take six points from their remaining two matches, added: "I thought we deserved a point, but we didn't get it.

"We now have two matches left and we will try and get six points to get us through to the knockout stages."
