Man-of-the-match: This accolade has to go to El Hadji Diouf, a real thorn in the side of France all day long. The key to the only goal of the game, his pace was a constant reminder that the French defence is reaching the end of its international lifespan.
90 min: Barthez is up for the last-minute corner and the ball goes right to the far side where Leboeuf's shot goes straight to Sylva.
90 min: Lizarazu's cross is sliced away hesitantly by Coly.
90 min: The fourth official announces three extra minutes.
90 min: Cisse beats Diatta down the right and the ball runs through to Henry whose powerful shot is parried at the second attempt by Sylva.
89 min: Vieira brings France forward again but Henry and Petit's interchange is foiled by Daf's timely tackle.
88 min: Leboeuf looks for Cisse run through the middle but Sylva is alert again to win the race for the ball.
87 min: Barthez charges out of goal and belts the ball downfield but again Senegal stand firm and the ball runs harmlessly through to Sylva.
86 min: Lizarazu's free kick into the area is laid back by Henry to Leboeuf whose 25-yarder flies straight into Sylva's grateful arms.
85 min: Petit's corner finds Desailly unmarked at the far post but he heads tamely wide.
84 min: Henry's centre beats everyone but Cisse picks it up on the far side and wins a corner.
83 min: Henry takes the corner from the left and Trezeguet's looping far-post header lands on the roof of the net.
82 min: Cisse's first run is stopped illegally by Diatta but Petit's free kick is headed away for a corner by the pressurised Senegalese.
81 min: France make a second substitution with highly-touted Djibril Cisse replacing Wiltord.
79 min: Another clever one-two between with Fadiga ends with Diop blasting an angled shot over the bar.
77 min: Lizarazu tricks his way past Coly and feeds Dugarry but his run into the box is halted by a strong tackle by Diao.
75 min: Henry threatens again and Diatta cuts out his low centre at the expense of a corner and Sylva claims Petit's corner comfortably.
74 min: The clock is ticking and France have not really made Sylva put off an outstanding save.
73 min: Another French free kick from the right by Petit is headed backwards by Daf and out for a corner.
71 min: Senegal are retreating deeper as France move forward and Sylva again leaves his area to clear the danger from Trezeguet's flick header.
69 min: Petit's resulting corner is heading towards Leboeuf at the near post but Coly just edges ahead to win a vital header.
68 min: France are pouring it on and Vieira finds space in the box but Diao makes a great block on his volley.
67 min: The woodwork is rattled for a third time as a cross finds its way through to Henry whose curling 20-yard chip is foiled again by the crossbar.
65 min: Fadiga escapes down the left, runs right at Leboeuf and then slams a stinging left-foot shot against the crossbar with Barthez totally beaten.
64 min: France win another free kick which France waste badly trying a slick move down the right which never comes off.
63 min: Dugarry is into the action quickly with a cross from his favoured left-hand side which Trezeguet cannot quite reach and the ball goes behind for a goal kick.
61 min: France make the first switch by replacing Djorkaeff with Christophe Dugarry.
60 min: Fadiga's inswinging free kick from the right is punched clear by Barthez although he received no challenge.
58 min: Sylva excels with a double save, firstly from Djorkaeff's skimming 25-yarder and then at the feet of Trezeguet when the ball squirms out of his grasp.
57 min: Henry bursts past Diatta down the left and tears towards the area but his low cross beats everyone and is picked up on the far side by Trezeguet who returns it to Henry at the far post but he heads over from six yards.
55 min: Tenacious midfield tackling forces Petit to go backwards but he earns a free kick for a trip by Cisse.
52 min: Henry is caught offside as Senegal clear their area quickly anticipating Leboeuf's ball into the box.
51 min: Cisse is the first Senegalese in the book for a trip on Desailly as he charged out of defence.
50 min: Petit hammers the dead ball against the wall and the underdogs survive.
49 min: Thuram makes a break down the right but Senegal hack his cross only as far as Djorkaeff who is tripped by Cisse just outside the box.
47 min: Senegal are close again as N'Diaye escapes down the right and whips over a vicious low cross that Diouf is inches away from converting but the flag is up for offside anyway.
46 min: France get the second half under way with an uphill task to come back from a goal behind.

45 min: Petit becomes the first player booked for a late lunge on Diouf.
45 min: France are on the attack again with another Djorkaeff free kick which is headed away by Daf at the near post.
45 min: The fourth official announces two minutes of added time in the first half.
44 min: Diouf tries to cut between Desailly and Thuram and appears to be fouled but the ref waves play on.
43 min: France launch another quick raid and Wiltord takes advantage of dummy runs by the strikers to advance to the edge of the area but his low shot is well saved by Sylva.
42 min: Vieira surges down field and is fouled by Cisse. Djorkaeff takes quickly and tries to find Trezeguet but when it's headed back to the Bolton man, he blazes a shot well over the bar.
40 min: Henry beats Daf and hammers a shot against the shins of Diao but Senegal deal with the corner.
39 min: Daf fells Wiltord 35 yards from goal but Djorkaeff's ambitious curling free kick is easily held by Sylva by his left-hand post.
37 min: Diouf is caught inches offside only yards inside the French half after being released by Diop's quick through ball.
36 min: Lilian Thuram's long throw is neatly taken down by Henry whose overhead kick floats towards Trezeguet at the far post but Diao leaps well to beat him to the header.
34 min: A foul on Wiltord gives France a promising position but Djorkaeff's free kick into the space at the near post is cleared by by Daf.
32 min: Henry escapes his marker down the left again but his centre from the dead-ball line is claimed by Sylva.
30 min: GOAL DIOP. The French are stunned as Diouf tricks Leboeuf on the left, darts to the bye-line and cuts the ball back to Petit who in trying to clear only presents the ball to Diop who slides the ball home from three yards.
29 min: Leboeuf tries to get Henry clear again but keeper Sylva races from his area and coolly heads the bouncing ball away.
27 min: Barthez releases Henry with a throw to the halfway line but when the move is switched to Djorkaeff on the left, his cross is dealt with comfortably.
26 min: Kadiga takes the free kick and swings int into the box where Barthez leaves his line to claim after initially dropping the ball.
25 min: Coly and Aliou Cisse neatly bring the ball out of defence and find Diouf down the right and he wins another free kick by taking on Desailly/
23 min: France hit the post after a smart move between Henry and Trezeguet who takes Henry's pass, steps inside Coly and hammers a right-foot shot against the post and out to safety.
20 min: Tony Sylva punches Emmanuel Petit's corner clear but only as far as Desailly and when the ball is returned to the box, Trezegeut has beaten the offside but fails to control it first time and Sylva is alert off his line to smother the ball.
19 min: Omar Daf misjudges the flight of Vieira's through ball and allows Wiltord to race to the byeline but Salif Diao blocks the expense of a corner.
17 min: A superb back-heel by Diouf releases Moussa N'Diaye down the right and he switches play across to Fadiga whose header on to the waiting Diouf opens up the French defence but the striker is just offside.
15 min: Leboeuf is forced to foul the dangerous Diouf after being robbed by the striker near the halfway line but Fadiga's free kick is won by Patrick Vieira though the ref gives the Frehcn a free kick anyway.
13 min: A spell of French pressure and slack defending by Senegal ends with Ferdinand Coly making a timely tackle on Henry as he heads towards the penalty area.
11 min: Pape Malick Diop picks up a loose ball 30 yards from goal but fails to trouble Barthez with a mis-hit grasscutter of a shot that barely reaches the goal.
9 min: Sylvain Wiltord comes into the game on the right when he receives Lebouef's pass and turns inside but a one-two with Djorkaeff is not accurate and Senegal clear up.
6 min: Senegal make the first dangerous attack when Fadigal skins Marcel Desailly down the right flank and cuts the ball back acutely to Diouf whose low shot goes straight to Barthez.
5 min: France have yet to make a serious attack but win a free kick in the Senegal half when Henry is hacked down but Frank Leboeuf's free kick cannot find its way to Trezegeut.
2 min: Senegal win the first free kick 35 yards from goal and Kalidou Fadiga fools the French defence by floating it towards El Hadji Diouf rather than shooting but his flicked header goes straight through to Fabien Barthez in goal. 1 min: Senegal get the match and the 2002 World Cup tournament under way.
Pre-match: The thigh injury keeps France's 1998 hero Zinedine Zidane out of action and Bolton's Youri Djorkaeff takes his place in the position behind the front two. Arsenal's Thierry Henry has recovered from his minor scare earlier the week to play up front with Juventus' David Trezeguet. Senegal's hopes rest on star striker and African Footballer of the Year El Hadji Diouf.
