Portugal's Daniel Kenedy claims slimming pills
were behind the failed drugs test which ended his World Cup.
The uncapped Maritimo midfielder has flown home from their training camp in
Macao after the Portuguese Football Association released him on the "advice of
their medical department".
State radio RDP said the 28-year-old had tested positive for a banned
substance on May 14.
Kenedy, who had been a surprise inclusion in the squad, said: "As I have a
tendency to get fat, I took some pills after the league championship to keep my
weight down in a time when there was no competition.
"I took three anti-doping tests during the season and nothing was caught. I'm
very sad.
"It's so unfair because the World Cup starts in a few days."
The Portuguese FA have yet to officially confirm the positive test, instead
waiting for the country's anti-doping authorities to make an announcement.
Portuguese FA vice-president Antonio Boronha said: "There is no statement and
I hope the situation is understood.
"Our only statement is the press release on our website saying Daniel Kenedy
was released from the national team under medical department advice."
Sporting Lisbon teenager Hugo Viana is set to be drafted in from Switzerland
where he is playing in the European Under-21 Championship.
"I am just waiting right now and no-one has told me anything yet. Let's see
what will happen," said the 19-year-old.
