USA coach Bruce Arena is expected to confirm 23-year-old defender Steve Cherundolo in his final 23-man squad to fly out to the World Cup on Thursday.

Cherundolo will replace midfielder Chris Armas who was ruled out after picking up an injury against Uruguay on May 12.

The Hanover star, who has just celebrated promotion with the German outfit to the Bundesliga, has earned 10 caps for his country.

Arena said: "Steve has performed extremely well for this team," said Arena, "and we are happy to welcome him to the group."

Meanwhile, Arena has dismissed the critics who believe his side will struggle against European outfits Poland and Portugal in Group D.

The US have been impressive against the likes of Honduras and Mexico but suffered major defeats against Germany and more recently Holland on Sunday.

"Don't worry about it," shrugged Arena.

"Come June 5, the past means nothing."

Arena's men will leave from New York later this week ahead of their opening group match against Portugal in Suwon on June 5.
