Spain could not be going into their second round meeting with the Republic of Ireland with their confidence any higher.

Three games played have brought as many wins and nine goals - and, seemingly, many more to come.

The speed and fluidity of their movement was too much for plucky South Africa who, however, were outclassed where it really mattered.

The Spaniards fielded a second string side with only keeper Casillas, Nadal and Raul present from their previous match.

And although at times they looked uncertain in defence, particularly to high balls crossed into the box from wide, it was their attack and the sensational Raul that was the dominant feature of the match.

Republic manager Mick McCarthy has to stop Raul - now with three goals in the tournament - if his side is to enjoy another glory night.

Spain are perennial under-achievers but you get the feeling that the side is on a roll now and will be formidable opponents for the Irish to stop.

Perhaps the Spaniards are not the quickest in defence and that may provide a way-in for the Damien Duff-Robbie Keane link.

But on the evidence of the match against South Africa, Spain have every reason to be optimistic.

True, the Irish are not likely to be as generous as the Africans were, particularly for the first two goals, but the Spaniards have invention in abundance and world class players to turn ideas into goals.

Spain were one of the pre-tournament favourites and have thoroughly justified their billing.

While the likes of France and Argentina are on their way home, and other favourites like England, Italy, Portugal, have failed to consistently impress, Spain have made easy work of their opening group.

Whether they have peaked too soon will remain to be seen.

One thing is for sure. The Republic will have they work cut out to stop the Spanish bandwagon.
