Picture Michael will have score updates in his cockpit (Allsport)

SCHUMACHER'S WORLD CUP DISTRACTION

By Ian Gordon, PA Sport Motor Racing Correspondent, Nurburgring

Michael Schumacher will be kept in touch with Germany's World Cup quarter-final clash with the United States by having the score flash up on his Ferrari steering wheel.

The world champion will miss the first half-hour of the game because of opening practice for Sunday's European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in Germany.

But football-mad Schumacher will use Formula One technology to have scores relayed directly to him in the cockpit.

"I would like to see the match but for other reasons I will have to miss the first part of it," said Schumacher, who plays regularly for the local side near his Swiss home.

"But the end of the game is always the most important part to watch. But I will be kept aware of the result all the time by the telemetry so I will be driving with my fingers crossed."

But Schumacher is refusing to make any prediction on the outcome given the results from Japan and South Korea so far which, unlike the destination of this year's drivers' crown, have been anything but predictable.

"There have been so many surprises in the World Cup this year I don't think anyone should make a prediction of what going to happen - I just hope we win," added Schumacher, who leads the championship by a massive 43 points.
