Olof Mellberg was brought to Villa Park by John Gregory as a replacement for England defender Gareth Southgate and quickly became a fans' favourite at the Midlands club.
He was signed for £5 million from Racing Santander in July 2001 after playing for Swedish sides AIK Solna and Degerfors in the early part of his career.
Mellberg is seen as a key defender for Swedish coaches Tommy Soderberg and Lars Lagerback with his towering presence in the air and his sound ability on the deck his two main components.
After signing for Aston Villa he became the most expensive ever Swedish player and if Sweden are to do well this summer, they will look to him to play a leading role at the heart of their defence.
