Impressive at the Asian Cup in 2000 but then fell out of favour and did not feature in any of China's World Cup qualifiers.

He returned to his best form with Beijing Guo'an this season, though, and forced his way back into the national side just in time to earn a call-up for the World Cup.

As he puts it: "I may have stood on the other side of the fence but the World Cup qualifying taught me a lot of things. I have grown as a player."
