In a side crammed with talented playmakers and young pretenders, this Sporting midfielder is a far more battling style of player.
He counts Estrela da Amadora, Vitoria Guimaraes, Benfica, Real Oviedo and now Sporting on a packed CV of past employers, but has now been in Lisbon for two seasons.
In and out of the national side over the past decade, his longest absence from the international game came after Portugal's controversial exit from the Euro 2000 semi-finals.
UEFA handed him an eight-month suspension for his part in Portuguese reaction after France had been awarded a controversial winning goal, but he is now back in the international fold.
An experienced squad member, a place in Antonio Oliveira's starting line-up remains unlikely.
